For each species, the authors examine the many-and-varied common names and full scientific name, with derivation, translation and a guide to pronunciation. Stories behind the name are included, as well as relevant aspects of biology, conservation and history. Original descriptions, translated by the authors, have been sourced for many species.
As well as being a book about names, this is a book about the history of the ever-developing understanding of birds, about the people who contributed to this understanding and, most of all, about the birds themselves. This second edition has been revised to follow current taxonomy and understanding of the relationships between families, genera and species. It contains new taxa, updated text and new vagrants and will be interesting reading for anyone with a love of birds, words or the history of Australian biology and bird-watching.

Reviews:
"The wealth of meticulously researched information presented in this book makes it an essential reference for anyone keen about birds and words, and a very welcome addition to ornithological literature."
Virgil Hubregtse, The Victorian Naturalist 136(6), 2019
"This wonderful book by Ian Fraser and Jeannie Gray fills a niche in the available bird literature as it seeks, and achieves admirably, to explain in depth how the Latin and English names of our Australian birds came about. ...If you are wondering what a Dick, Dick, the Devil is, or a howling jackass, or even a doubtful reed-bellower, then this is the book for you."
Libby McGill, Western Australian Bird Notes 172, December 2019
"In truth there is little for the carping critic to cavil about. All in all, Australian Bird Names: Origins and Meanings is a most valuable reference work, rich in interesting information of a kind not easily found elsewhere. It is good to see that CSIRO Publishing appreciates the need to keep it up to date."
Kevin Windle, Canberra Bird Notes 44(3), December 2019
"At times amusing and always interesting, this book a would make an excellent addition to the bookshelf of anyone who is interested in birds, words or history."
Rhianna King, Landscope, Autumn 2020
"Birdwatchers with a thirst for knowledge about all manner of trivia and history will enjoy poring through hundreds of pages crammed with details."
John Peter, Australian Birdlife, December 2019
Clarity, refined.
The Fujinon HC 8×42 and HC 10×42 are premium Japanese-built ED roof-prism binoculars, engineered for serious birdwatchers, naturalists and outdoor observers across Australia.
Hand-built in Japan. Designed for a lifetime of mornings, evenings and everything in between.
Premium ED binoculars, refined down to the last millimetre.
Every choice in the Fujinon HC series, from the glass to the prism coatings to the magnesium chassis, is made in service of one thing: an image so honest you forget the binocular is there.
Extra-low dispersion glass. Practically zero colour fringing.
ED lens elements paired with lanthanum-glass eyepieces suppress chromatic and spherical aberration so subjects sit on a clean, true-colour background, edge to edge.
Fujinon SUPER EBC.
Signature multi-coating on every air-to-glass surface, for higher light transmission.
Prism reflectance.
Phase-corrected, dielectric-coated Schmidt-Pechan roof prisms preserve image brightness right to your eye.
Magnesium-alloy body.
Hand-built in Fujinon's Omiya factory. Lightweight, rigid and quietly serious.
Waterproof & fog-proof.
Nitrogen-purged and O-ring sealed. Submersible 1m for 5 minutes; ready for any Australian weather.
Nine ED elements. Seven groups. One uncompromised view.
Every element in the Fujinon HC optical path is positioned to control distortion across the entire image circle, not just the centre. The result is bright, edge-to-edge sharpness that holds true from the heart of the field right out to the very edge - ideal for tracking fast-moving birds in flight or scanning bushland for movement at dawn.
Engineered to disappear into the conditions you take it through.
A nitrogen-purged, O-ring sealed magnesium-alloy chassis, waterproof to one metre and fog-resistant across rapid temperature shifts. Water-repellent coatings on both objectives and eyepieces shed rain and sea spray, while a slip-resistant elastomeric grip keeps the binocular under confident control with one hand, with or without gloves.
Filter threads, for casual binocular astronomy.
M46 × 0.75 threaded objectives accept polariser, neutral-density and even narrowband nebula filters - rare in a birding-grade binocular. The same Fujinon HC you use for the dawn chorus can pull detail out of the Southern Hemisphere Milky Way, the Magellanic Clouds and bright nebulae like Eta Carinae after dark.

Kendrick Secondary Heater Wrap-Medium heaters are designed to work with Newtonian/Dobsonian secondary mirrors that are attached to a "stalk", but don't have enough exposed mirror to use our "Split-Ring" or Elliptical style heaters. The heater warms the stalk, and that heat is then conducted to the mirror.
How to choose the right model for your telescope?
It's easy! You just need to make a few easy measurements. We can't help choose because we don't have your telescope in our shop and there are literally thousands of models and "eras" of these telescopes. Even models that have been in continuous production for decades frequently change the mirror assembly design, so we don't want to suggest a model that might not work. The good news is .... you have the telescope in-hand, so a few quick measurements is all it will take to find the perfect fit.
All models include easy electrical connectors and a neoprene wrap-around insulator which greatly enhances the performance of these heaters as it prevents the warmth generated by the heater from dissipating into the atmosphere.
The power draw is incredibly low using only 0.2amp or 3 watts at 100% Controller setting
This model is a simple strip-heater that can be mounted either horizontally or vertically. There are 3 sizes available.

An integrated humidity and temperature sensor activates the anti-fog system before condensation reaches the optics. No dew heater cables to route or remember — critical for humid Australian coastal and bush nights.
225 GB. Multi-night. Onboard.
225 GB of internal storage stores 30 multi-night imaging slots simultaneously. FITS frames, TIFF pre-stacks, and JPEG previews. A 30 MB/s USB-C connection transfers a night’s work to a laptop in minutes when you’re ready to process.
Resume where you left off. Automatically.
The Vespera Pro 2 automatically continues a mosaic project across multiple nights, restoring framing and settings between sessions without any manual intervention. Large-scale targets — the Vela Supernova Remnant, the Magellanic Clouds — become achievable from a dark paddock, not just a permanent observatory.
Deeper contrast from any backyard.
Internal precision optical baffles block stray-light paths that wash out contrast in light-polluted skies. The result is a higher effective dynamic range and deeper limiting magnitude than unshielded designs — a meaningful advantage from suburban Sydney, Melbourne, or Brisbane.
Take it anywhere. Image everything.
50 mm aperture. 245 mm focal length. Lanthanum glass S-FPL52 apochromatic optics with a flat-field corrector. The Vespera Pro 2 weighs 5 kg and folds to 48 × 20 × 9 cm — carry-on size, yet capable of images that rival dedicated rigs costing far more. Eleven hours of battery runs from dusk to dawn with no power cable required.
M17. The Omega Nebula.
4 hours integration. Dual-band filter. Bortle 4 skies. The Sony IMX 676’s 2 μm pixels render the intricate emission structure with a level of detail previously beyond any fully automated instrument.
M27. The Dumbbell Nebula.
4 hours integration, dual-band filter, Bortle 4 skies. The 12.5 MP square sensor resolves the nebula’s detailed outer shell and bipolar lobes. A single automated session from a dark-sky site.
Everything automated. Publication-quality results from night one.
Sony IMX 676 sensor: 12.5 MP, 3536 × 3536 pixels, 2 μm pixel size — the highest native resolution on any smart telescope

Optolong L-Synergy Dual Narrowband Filter
The Optolong L-Synergy filter is designed for astrophotographers using DSLR, color CMOS, or CCD cameras who want to achieve stunning narrowband results without switching to a monochrome system. By pairing traditional dual-narrowband (Ha & OIII) concepts with a unique “Ha & OIII + SII & OIII” approach, L-Synergy overcomes the usual limitations of colour cameras and makes Hubble-Palette–style imaging accessible to everyone.
With this filter, you can produce deep, high-contrast SHO-like images of emission nebulae using your existing colour camera—no additional SHO filters or monochrome upgrade required. It’s an affordable way to achieve professional-level results even under bright suburban skies.
Why Choose the L-Synergy Filter?
The L-Synergy is a dual 7 nm narrowband filter engineered for telescopes with an f/ratio of f/3.3 or slower. Years of optical refinement have produced a design that suppresses bright star halos while delivering extremely high transmission in the key emission bands.
-
Selective Narrowband Performance
Transmits only the OIII (500.7 nm) and SII (672.4 nm) nebula emission lines, rejecting unwanted wavelengths and light pollution. -
Exceptional Contrast and Signal-to-Noise
By isolating the oxygen and sulfur signals, the filter produces a darker background sky and dramatically improves contrast—especially valuable in heavily light-polluted environments. -
Light-Pollution Resistant
Filters out the vast majority of urban skyglow, allowing astrophotographers to capture clean, detailed nebula structure from almost any location.
Optical Design
L-Synergy is precision-engineered based on the spectral behaviour of emission nebulae and common light-pollution sources. Its carefully tuned passbands maintain consistently high transmission in both SII and OIII, ensuring accurate colour capture and high-quality data for processing.
The result: a powerful, easy-to-use narrowband solution that unlocks deep-sky imaging performance far beyond what typical colour cameras can achieve, giving more astrophotographers access to true SHO-style imaging.

The James Webb Space Telescope took three decades from conception to launch but the wait has been worth it. The results of the most anticipated telescope of the 21st century have been nothing short of spectacular.
The idea for the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) was first raised in 1989, well before the enormously successful Hubble Space Telescope was launched. The infrared telescope with a mirror larger than four meters was launched on Christmas Day 2021.
In the summer of 2022, NASA released the first scientific images from Webb to the amazement of more than 300,000 viewers who watched the event live, and hundreds of millions around the world who have viewed Webb's images since then.
Webb's Cosmos is written in the spirit of Terry Dickinson's enormously popular book Hubble's Universe, which has sold over 100,000 copies. This book contains both the classic Webb images that have already become famous and the latest images from the frontiers of science taken by Webb, some of which appear here for the first time.
Author Marcin Sawicki is a professional astronomer who is an active user of Webb's images and data. He brings a wealth of knowledge and personal experience to the book and explains the science behind the images in accurate but accessible and engaging language.
Webb's Cosmos first provides the needed historical and scientific background to understand how the telescope works and what it can do. The book then presents a curated selection of some 200 photographs with descriptive captions that narrate these images of the distant universe. Chapters include:
• Stars and gas clouds
• Galaxies both near and far
• Planets and our solar system
• Exoplanets.
AUTHOR:
Marcin Sawicki is a professional research astronomer who has been involved with the James Webb Space Telescope Project for more than two decades and is now extensively using Webb for research. He is the co-author of 20 research papers based on data taken with Webb. A professional educator and experienced science communicator, Sawicki is Professor of Astronomy and Physics at Saint Mary's University and has held prestigious appointments: Canada Research Chair, Canadian Space Agency Science Fellow and Plaskett Fellow.

The equatorial mode is ideal for astrophotography while the alt-azimuth configuration is more practical for observation as polar alignment is not required. Moreover, two telescopes can be simultaneously mounted in alt-azimuth configuration.
The popular SynScan Go-To system allows full control of both R.A. and Dec. axes with 9 slew speeds and 5 arcminute pointing precision, allowing you to quickly and accurately locate objects across the night sky.
The Go-To system can automatically slew the telescope on command toward planets, stars, nebulae, galaxies, clusters and much more. The Sky-Watcher SynScan system has 42,900 memorised celestial objects for an amazing journey in the night sky. The Deep Sky Tour function suggests a list of the most interesting deep sky objects currently visible, so even the novice astronomer can easily observe faint objects at the touch of a button. Once achieving alignment, the patented Freedom Find™ dual encoders will then keep track of your position to within 4.2 arcminutes. The mount will retain alignment even after releasing the clutches and manually pointing the scope to a new part of the sky.
The AZ-EQ5 is equipped with two SNAP ports for dual control of camera shutter release. Working with the SynScan hand control’s “Camera Control” function, a user can take batch exposures in up to 8 groups of “Exposure-time & Frames”. An indexer on the R.A. worm gear keeps track of its current position, so that the Periodic Error inherent to all worm gear driven mounts can be learned and permanently corrected for. With the SFL 30 ZEISS now offers compact high-performance binoculars in the practical design of pocket binoculars that, thanks to their light weight, do not add to the load, even on longer excursions. With a field of view of up to 120 meters at a distance of 1,000 meters and a closest focusing distance of 1.5 meters, the SFL 10x30 deliver a perfect overview combined with precise detail recognition. The lens diameter has been reduced by 2 mm, making it possible to use thinner lens elements at closer spacing and thus reduce the binoculars' weight by up to 23% and their length by up to 21% compared to the ZEISS Victory SF models. As a result, the SFL binoculars are up to 30% lighter than comparable products from competitors.
Experience nature in all its splendor
The Ultra-High-Definition (UHD) concept features a special coating and an improved optical design that ensures the binoculars deliver the highest level of detail and reproduce colors with natural fidelity. This makes it possible to precisely identify the smallest features in the plumage and reliably distinguish between species.
90% Light Transmission
Featuring 90% light transmission and ZEISS T* multicoating, you can clearly and precisely recognize details in the twilight, ensuring that you capture every moment, even in darker environments.
Comfortable viewing experience
The perfect ergonomics of the ZEISS SFL models enable quick and easy positioning of the eye and also provide comfortable and immersive viewing due to the large exit pupil. In addition, the improved eyecups provide an even better ergonomic feel and a smooth transition between the touch points, which are precisely defined and can be reached perfectly.
ZEISS T* Coating
ZEISS T* coating is a guarantee of the brilliant, high-contrast images which you will experience above all in adverse light conditions and in the twilight. Behind it, however, there is no specific formula for building up the layers. Instead, it is a technology that is constantly adjusted to suit new glass materials and requirements, which varies from lens to lens.
A clear view, whatever the weather
There are always exciting things to be seen in the world of nature – even in wet weather. This is why ZEISS developed LotuTec®. A coating for the lenses of binoculars and spotting scopes that enables a clear and unhindered view in all weather conditions.
