Connection diagram
The Celestron Off Axis Guider is an essential astroimaging accessory for long focal length telescopes that require the most accurate guiding possible. The Celestron Off Axis Guider uses a prism to intercept a small portion of the telescope’s focal plane (outside the field of view of the main imaging camera) to locate a guide star. Any movement seen by the guide star will be the exact same movement seen by the imaging camera. Guiding this way will correct for tracking errors, as well as opto-mechanical errors or flexure. The result: better astroimages with pinpoint round stars.
Off Axis Guiders have been around for a long time, but typically pose three main challenges:
Finding a guide star from the far edges of the telescope’s focal plane can be difficult, considering the small field of view and sometimes less-than-ideal illumination.
Getting both imaging camera and autoguider to reach focus with one another is time consuming and sometimes requires experimentation.
Additional spacers and adapters are usually required for your particular camera, telescope, and autoguider, which adds to cost and complexity.
The Celestron Off Axis Guider addresses these challenges by:
Providing a large 12.5mm prism that can be adjusted to move closer to the center of the telescope’s focal plane, depending on the size of the imaging camera. This results in brighter guide stars, with the help of the large prism to fully illuminate the autoguider sensor.
Featuring a high-quality, fixed-orientation Helical focuser. This provides extremely smooth and accurate focus of the autoguider without changing (or twisting) the autoguider camera orientation.
Including all the needed spacers and adapters are included for most common imaging configurations, including DSLR cameras, Nightscape CCD cameras, and more. The following adapters are included: SCT/EdgeHD, female M48, female M42 (T-thread), male M48, male M42 (T-thread), 3 T-thread spacers
Additonal Specifications

New Improved from ZWO-OAG-L ZWO-OAG-L is the latest iteration of M68 OAG with a larger prism size of 12mm x 12mm. The bigger clear aperture brings wider field of view in guiding. It is easy to use, and suitable for users who are interested in long focal length photography. To take the most advantage of it, we recommend you to match it with large format guiding cameras. Features: 1. Lightweight and exquisite, 17.5mm thickness. 2. Prism size: 12mm x 12mm. 3. The effective light-passing aperture is 11.7mm x 8.3mm. 4. Can be used to connect the main camera and guide camera simultaneously. No guide telescope required. 5. Packaged with an M48 sensor tilt plate (5mm). Operating Guide: 1. For guiding, OAG-L can only work with ASI Mini cameras like ASI174MM Mini, ASI290MM Mini and ASI120MM Mini. 2. Considering the large prism size, we don’t recommend you use OAG-L with telescopes whose clear aperture is smaller than M48. 3. Yet it is recommended to use with 2” EFW or 7x36mm EFW, and with APS-C cameras (ASI2600) or full frame cameras (ASI6200/2400). The large clear aperture supports full frame cameras without vignetting. 4. The major differences between ZWO-OAG-L and M68 OAG are about the prism size and the threads. ZWO-OAG-L removed the inner threads so you can directly use the screws to connect it to other equipment. 5. If the thread of your telescope side is M48, then you don’t need to remove the M48 sensor tilt plate coming with ZWO-OAG-L. On the contrary, you need to remove it and use some other sensor tilt plate at the corresponding thread of your telescope. The pictures below show how to remove the sensor tilt plate: OAG-L Mechanical Drawing OAG-L & OAG-L-68 Mechanical Drawing Connection Guide: Please Note: While adding ZWO-OAG-L into your optical train, please make sure the prism won’t block the camera sensor. You can use the guiding screw to adjust the guiding camera’s focus length. Please make sure the distance from the prism to the main camera and to the guide camera are the same. To ensure the result, it is better to do this in the daytime for the adjustment will be very difficult at night.

QHYCCD has designed a dedicated Off-Axis Guider (OAG) for the miniCAM8, featuring a large 14×10mm prism. The oversized prism maximizes light throughput to the guide camera, enabling higher guiding precision. It comes with a standard M48 telescope interface for easy connection and maintains a 55mm back focal distance for broad compatibility with imaging setups.
Stable and Strong
High Parallelism
Direct connection to the camera with six screws ensures connection accuracy and parallelism, providing a reliable mechanical connection for your photography
Precision Connection
No Deflection
The main purpose of the QHY OAG-S is to use the same optical path as the main camera. This avoids the problem of differential deflection that can occur when using a separate optical system for guiding. In the case of the OAG, a part of the image is picked-off from the edge of the imaging circle which does not block the main CCD. This method provides more accurate guiding and sharper images.
Multiple Adapters
Flexible Combinations
In addition to the connection with the A-series cameras, you can also use the various standard or optional accessories provided by QHYCCD to achieve complex and adaptable connections, including the use of the QHY OAG-S as a stand alone unit, connection to QHY filter wheels, etc.
Stable and Strong
Precise Easy Focusing
The QHYOAG includes a precision 1.25-inch helical focuser that accepts our QHY5II and QHY5III cameras. The focusing process is comfortable. After focusing, you can lock the focus mechanism with thumbscrews.

Produce a larger area of illumination for your 9.25”, 11” or 14” Schmidt-Cassegrain or EdgeHD telescope by using the this adapter. When this adapter is paired with our Off-Axis Guider, these two imaging accessories allow you to use the full image circle in our larger scopes. This configuration is especially helpful to owners of larger format cameras, such as the Canon 5D or 6D, since their full frame can take advantage of the more substantial area of illumination produced by larger optical tubes.
What’s New!
The Large SCT & EdgeHD Adapter V2 for Off-Axis Guider has a longer optical length—38mm. The adapter’s longer length provides DSLR cameras back-focus spacing for Schmidt-Cassegrain and EdgeHD optical tubes in conjunction with the Off-Axis Guider without the need for extra adapters or spacers.
Body
The Large SCT & EdgeHD Adapter V2 for Off-Axis Guider is machined aluminum black anodized. The internal surfaces are sandblasted to help prevent glare and provide the highest contrast. The adapter has a knurled surface providing a great gripping surface for threading and unthreading.

SBIG StarChaser SC-2 Off-Axis Guider Cameras
Diffraction Limited’s new SBIG StarChaser SC-2 is the world’s first, all-in-one independent Off-Axis Guiding Camera with Adaptive Optics support. The StarChaser operates independently of the main camera. It combines a pick-off mirror, guider camera, guide port, and Adaptive Optics control.
Stop wasting time with ruined exposures caused by flexure between the main camera and guider. Off-axis guiding eliminates this problem by using the same optical path for the main camera and the guider.
Most off-axis guider assemblies are awkward to use, consume too much back focus, and require you to focus by slipping a camera inside an eyepiece holder. SBIG pioneered simplified off-axis guiding, with guide sensors built into CCD cameras. Later, we created the self-guiding filter wheel, placing the guide sensor in the light path ahead of photon-robbing narrowband filters. The StarChaser is the next step in this progression – a fully independent guide camera with AO capability.
Note: When using with StarChaser with AO, you will need a StarChaser to AO-X/AO-8T Adapter Cable. The necessary adapter cable is included in our StarChaser SC-3 / AO-X Bundle and StarChaser SC-2 / AO-8A Bundle.
Three Versions Available
StarChaserSC-2 is designed to work with our compact SBIG cameras. It supports the AO-8A adaptive optics unit. See the table below for compatibility with various camera models.
Adapters are also available to attach StarChaser to legacy STL cameras. For STL cameras with smaller sensors and internal filter wheel, you can use the SC-2 with the appropriate adapter. Another adapter is available to attach the SC-3-SHORT, for STL cameras with larger sensors and the external filter wheel.
The StarChaser represents our next generation of off-axis guide technology. It features a high-sensitivity 1.3 megapixel Global Shutter CMOS sensor with 4.8 micron pixels. Unlike competing autoguiders, the StarChaser has a mechanical shutter for easy dark frame correction. This feature, standard on all SBIG guiders, optimizes sensitivity and eliminates hot pixels that could degrade guiding accuracy. The pick-off mirror position is adjustable by loosening a locking knob and sliding the mirror into or out of the housing. You can avoid vignetting the main sensor while optimizing the light path into the guide sensor. Once that is set, focus is adjusted simply by turning a second knob. Adaptive Optics Control
Thanks to the SBIG StarChaser series, our renowned Adaptive Optics (AO) technology is now available for virtually our entire camera line! Our AO-8A (available separately) bolts onto the front of the StarChaser SC-2. The StarChaser is in turn attached to the front of an SBIG standard filter wheel and camera. Adaptive Optics technology eliminates guiding errors caused by common mount problems such as stiction, periodic error, and wind loads. It can even reduce “slow seeing” effects resulting in higher resolution images. Thin and Adaptable
The STarChaser StarChase ST-2 SC-2 is just 0.800″ (20.3 mm) thick. When attaching to a filter wheel the existing adapter plate (0.147″ / 3.7 mm thick) would normally be moved from the filter wheel onto the front of the SC-2. When attaching an AO-8A to the front of the SC-2, the adapter plate is not used. StarChase SC-2 Instruction Manual
