To most accurately test and collimate telescopes, reflectors, catadioptric, and refractors, you must perform a star test. However, to do so, you need a star.
Sadly, a real star is not always available due to poor weather conditions or location.
Even when a star is available, you will need a good tracking system for doing star test as the star is always moving.
Also air turbulence may affect your test, and the real star may not even reveal the true quality of your telescopes or give you a perfect collimation.
However, an artificial star is an excellent alternative to do the star test. With an artificial star, star tests can be accurately conducted anytime and anywhere.
However, the problem with the artificial star is that you need many different sizes of artificial stars for different telescopes of different apertures with different focal ratios, and even for the same telescopes but at different distances, and under different lighting environments.
The Binocular and Telescope Shop
With the Hubble 5 Star Artificial Star you can collimate your telescope no matter what aperture or focal ratio.
Bright LED light shines through 5 precision pinholes (50/100/150/200/250 microns).
Comes with Magnetic Mask to block out pinholes not being used.

The Celestron Cheshire Collimation Eyepiece is ideal for precise collimation of Newtonians and helpful for aligning Schmidt-Cassegrains. This special eyepiece fits into 1¼" focusers or diagonals.
Alignment is easy using the small opening on one end and thin cross hairs at the other end. The collimation eyepiece is more accurate than the simple Collimation Tool.

Farpoint 2 Inch Collimation Kit
Farpoint Collimation Kit 2 Inch includes a 1.25″ and 2″ stepped barrel 650nm laser collimator plus 2″ cheshire. These tools help align the optical axes of the mirrors on a Newtonian Reflector.
Farpoint 650nm Laser Collimator is precisely machined from a single piece of aluminum in a single machining step, resulting in perfect alignment. Offering the smallest aperture of any other laser in the amateur astronomy market, Farpoint lasers feature an aperture (0.76mm or 30/1000 of an inch) producing less speckling and more precise reading of the laser beam’s position on the telescope mirror.
Features a 1.25″ and 2″ stepped barrel, an extra bright 650nm red laser, and superior EIGHT screw alignment arrangement ensuring that BOTH ends of the laser diode are held in place by two sets of directly opposing screws for precise and lasting alignment.
Farpoint 2″ Cheshire Collimator is a precision-machined, red anodized alignment tool for 2″ apertures, is practically indestructible, and requires no batteries.
A Cheshire eyepiece or Cheshire collimator consists of a peephole that is inserted into the telescope focuser in place of the eyepiece. Ambient light falls on the brightly painted oblique back of the peephole. Images of this bright surface are reflected by the mirrors or lenses of the telescope and can thus be seen by a person peering through the hole. A Cheshire eyepiece contains no lenses or other polished optical surfaces. For Newtonian Reflectors only.
Kit also includes a mirror spotting template and triangle center spots to help simplify the process of center spotting a primary mirror.
Â
This Farpoint Collimation Kit 2 Inch # FP216 contains the following two items in a single, more economical package:
- Farpoint Laser Collimator, 650nm Red Laser with 1.25" & 2" Stepped Barrel # FP210
- Farpoint 2" Reflective Cheshire Collimator # FP261

Quickly and conveniently collimate your telescope with the saxon 1.25 Laser Collimator!
Quickly guides you towards the precise alignment of your telescope, this aluminum laser collimator has a bulls-eye target that allows you to easily adjust the telescope's primary mirror by tweaking the adjustment screws.Â
Collimation is successful once the laser beam hits the bulls-eye.
Proper collimation will mean sharper views and better astro photos by better the best from your telescope's optics.
This will work with all Newtonian style reflecting telescopes and also suits M42 and M48 threads.

Farpoint Laser Collimator 650nm (1.25 inch )
All Farpoint laser collimators have a LIFE TIME Alignment Guarantee. We will realign any Farpoint laser collimator for free! But Farpoint lasers keep their factory alignment. This is due to our robust laser body and (most importantly) our unique alignment screw design explained below.
Farpoint lasers have EIGHT alignment screws instead of six, four, or even three as in some other lasers. Instead of a staggered arrangement (top hole, bottom hole, top hole) that can allow the diode to move, BOTH ends of the laser diode are held in place by two sets of directly opposing screws for precise and lasting alignment. Again, only Farpoint lasers have this superior alignment screw arrangement with four DIRECTLY OPPOSING screws aligning the top of the laser diode and another four DIRECTLY OPPOSING screws aligning the bottom of the laser diode.
Farpoint laser bodies are precisely machined from a single piece of aluminum in a single machining step, resulting in perfect alignment.
Farpoint lasers have a small aperture (0.76mm or 30/1000 of an inch) for less speckling and more precise reading of the laser beam’s position on the telescope mirror. Farpoint has the smallest aperture of any laser in the amateur astronomy market.
