The Celestron C8-A is the direct (but much improved) descendent of Celestron’s revolutionary C8 that transformed the hobby of astronomy when it was unveiled in 1970. This rugged aluminum optical tube is only 17 inches long and weighs just 13 pounds, making it easy to transport and set up. But the views are much more impressive than what you’d expect from such a compact instrument. The tube offers 2032 mm of focal length and a focal ratio of f/10, with the added versatility of Fastar (see below).
It is equipped with Celestron’s patented StarBright® XLT optical coatings, which visibly increase contrast and light transmission for brighter deep space images and shorter exposure times. With StarBright XLT, you’ll be able to discern subtle details while viewing the Moon and planets as well as faint galaxies and nebulae.
The Celestron C8-A can be mounted on a multitude of computerized telescope mounts thanks to its CGEM style dovetail bar. This iconic optical tube provides the best balance of portability, handling ease, light gathering ability and price ever offered to the amateur astronomer.
Fastar Technology
In 1997, CCDs were making a name for themselves in the astrophotography world, quickly supplanting traditional film photography thanks to their speed and convenience. This was the year that Celestron joined forces with the Santa Barbara Instruments Group (SBIG) to produce Fastar, a revolutionary add-on to Celestron’s hugely popular Schmidt-Cassegrain (SCT) optical system.
With Fastar, the SCT’s secondary mirror can be removed and replaced with a field-flattening lens assembly (sold separately by third party manufacturers) so that a CCD camera can be used in the front of the telescope at the f/2 focus of the instrument’s primary mirror. The potential of the Fastar system is staggering: exposures are 25 times shorter than if the camera was placed at the instrument’s native f/10 focus. Imagers can capture galaxies and nebulae with exposures of just 30 seconds.
StarBright XLT is Celestron’s revolutionary optical coating system. It consistently outperforms all other coatings in the commercial telescope market. There are three major components that make up our StarBright XLT high-transmission optical system design:
- Unique enhanced multi-layer mirror coatings made from precise layers of aluminum, SiO2 (quartz), TiO2 (titanium dioxide), and SiO2 (silicon dioxide). Reflectivity is fairly flat across the spectrum, optimizing it for both imaging and visual observing.
- Multi-layer anti-reflective coatings made from precise layers of MgF2 (magnesium fluoride) and HfO2 (hafnium dioxide). Hafnium—a rare element that costs nearly $2,000 per kilogram—gives us a wider band pass than the titanium used in competing coatings.
- High-transmission water white glass is used instead of soda lime glass for the corrector lens. Water white glass transmits about 90.5% of light without anti-reflective coatings; that’s 3.5% better than uncoated soda lime glass. When water white glass is used in conjunction with StarBright XLT’s anti-reflective coatings, the average transmission reaches an astonishing 97.4.

It is at moments like these that you find out whether you are properly equipped. Wherever you are with Swarovski Optik, the natural world becomes ever more amazing. The Swarovski STS 65 HD observation telescope sets the highest standards among telescopes in this category. The STS 65 HD is more compact and lighter than scopes in the 80mm class, providing better portability in the field.
The use of fluorite HD lenses virtually eliminates colour fringing (chromatic aberration) for contrast-rich images. As a result, significant improvements in resolution and contrast are achieved when compared to conventional grades of glass. This is the best option for perfect image fidelity when digiscoping or for demanding visual observations.
The 25-50x eyepiece provides variable magnification and achieves luminous, diamond-bright images with edge-to-edge sharpness across the entire magnification range, while at the same time providing a wide field of view. This configuration is very good for all birding situations in particular – enabling both scanning of the terrain and bird identification in razor-sharp detail across the whole field. It is the most popular option for general nature observation.
Note: If you intend to use your scope for digiscoping, the Swarovski STS 65 HD with 25-50x wide eyepiece is preferable. This eyepiece provides a wide apparent field of view and minimizes vignetting when used for digiscoping.
The non-stick effect of the SWAROCLEAN coating on the outer surface of the lens makes cleaning objective and eyepiece lenses considerably easier, above all when removing dried-on mineral residues (e.g. water marks due to condensation), insect repellents and tree resin. The lenses require less intensive cleaning which significantly increases the longevity of optical products.

Ideal filters for the reception of the moon and planets, notably Mars, with telescopes from 6" (150mm) aperture.
The ProPlanet IR 742 only allows infrared light with wavelengths of more than 742 nm to pass. In this wavelength range the effects of seeing are significantly lower than in the visible spectrum of the human eye. This allows much sharper images than are usually obtained from your device and location. Another advantage is that the sky background of advanced dawn is dark and so the filter even allows photography of the planets and the moon at daylight.
Main use
The Astronomik ProPlanet IR 742 cuts off the visible part of the spectrum and allows the light of wavelengths longer then 742nm to pass. Due to this behavior the part of the spectrum that is most sensitive to bad seeing is rejected. This approach does a big improvement to the imaging of planets and the moon. The image is more steady than the image in the visible light with nearly identical exposure times.
Jupiter, imaged with L-RGB Filtern (left) and Astronomik ProPlanet 742 (right)
Comparing sharpness in IR-R-G-B at Saturn
Comparing L-RGB versus IR-RGB at Saturn
Other uses
- Besides astrophotography the filter allows you to get stunning results in nature photography. If an EOS-Clip Filter is used in an MC modified DSLR you get tremendous results imaging the flora. The filter cuts off the part of the spectrum where Chlorophyll looks green and shows its high reflectivety in the near infrared. If trees are photographed in spring and summer under blue skies you get stunning images with white trees and clouds in front of a near black background.
- Darkens the background during twilight.
- Imaging of bright planets, stars and comets by day.
- Imaging of young stars in dust clouds and stellar nurseries.
Alternatives
When the seeing is very bad and the instrument is 10" (250 mm) or larger, the Astronomik ProPlanet IR 807 may be the better choice.
saxon Plossl eyepieces can be used on all types of telescopes - refractors, reflector, and catadioptrics such as Celestron SCT telescopes.
Featuring a 4-element design, this Plossl eyepiece ensures maximum light transition, minimises spherical aberration, distortion, astigmatism, and off-axis colour. The edge-to-edge blackened optics provide excellent contrast across the 52° apparent field of view.
This 6.3mm size offers higher magnification than the 10mm eyepiece that comes as standard with many telescopes. Ideal for planets especially Saturn, Jupiter and Mars.

The Astronomik CLS is a budget filter for visual observation, Black & White photography and CCD photographs of nebulae, galaxies and star clusters with astronomical instruments of any size.
The Astronomik CLS blocks the light of the spectral lines of mercury and sodium-vapor lamps and lets the largest part of the visible light and H-alpha emissions pass. All the important emission lines, as well as the spectral region that the very well dark adapted eye can see, can pass through the filter.
Main use
The filters are optimized for use with aperture ratios from 1:3 to 1:15. Transmission losses and chromatic distortions, which are problems with other filters, only appear with Astronomik filters when extremely bright aperture ratios of 1:2 and more are used. The CLS filter is suitable for use with telescopes of all aperture sizes.
Suitability
- Visual observation (dark skies): Good, to reduce light pollution by mercury-vapour lamps (streetlight)
- Visual observation (urban skies): Good, an UHC-E or UHC filter is more suitable

Night Sky Observers Guide - Vol 2 is for Spring and Summer (Autumn and Winter for the Southern Hemisphere)
The original purpose of The Night Sky Observer’s Guide was to close the gap between observing literature and modern optics. It provided the owner of a medium- or large-aperture telescope with some idea of what to look for in such instruments — both what objects can be seen, and what details may be seen within these objects. Now, with four volumes, it has become an indispensable resource for observing.
The Night Sky Observer’s Guide - Vol 2 is especially aimed at amateurs interested in observing galaxies, nebula, and clusters, and also includes double and variable stars. The most famous or visually impressive of these have written descriptions similar to those for other deep-sky objects. For most of the deep-sky objects covered, there is a brief description as seen through two or more telescopes apertures such as 8/10", 12/14", 16/18", 20/22", and at different powers. Eyepiece impression sketches are provided for hundreds of objects. Although this book was intended for Northern Latitudes as is evident by the volume names, it is a very useful addition to any astronomer's library of observational aids.
Each chapter is devoted to a constellation, with general comments on the first page. The second page shows a map of the constellation facing a table of stellar data, which usually fills the entire page. The remaining pages of each chapter contain photographs, sketches, and finding charts. Throughout, descriptions of objects include views seen through different-sized instruments.
CONSTELLATIONS COVERED:
Antlia, Aquila, Bootes, Canes Venatici, Capricornus, Centaurus, Coma Berenices, Corona Australis, Corona Borealis, Corvus, Crater, Cygnus, Delphinus, Draco, Equuleus, Hercules, Hydra, Leo, Leo Minor, Libra, Lupus, Lyra, Microscopium, Ophiuchus, Sagitta, Sagittarius, Scorpius, Scutum, Serpens Caput, Serpens Cauda, Sextans, Ursa Major, Ursa Minor, Virgo, and Vulpecula.

The convenient fully retractable handle makes it easy to carry anywhere you need and the PC-ABS blended case construction provides a lightweight (for its size) yet extremely durable surface that will last for years. Jupio is known for their very long warranties and this product is no exception.

Optolong L2 Dual-Combo Filter Set
The Optolong L2 Dual-Combo Set includes two premium dual-narrowband filters, L-eXtreme and L-Synergy, designed for colour-camera astrophotography. Compatible with telescopes f/3.3 and slower, this set allows users to capture Hubble Palette deep-sky images without switching to a monochrome camera or buying a full three-filter SHO set. It provides professional-level narrowband imaging with minimal investment.
The L-eXtreme transmits OIII (500.7 nm) and Hα (656.3 nm), blocking unwanted light-pollution wavelengths to deliver bright nebula details with high contrast. Years of refinement optimise performance and reduce bright star halos.
The L-Synergy transmits OIII (500.7 nm) and SII (672.4 nm) with high efficiency while rejecting other wavelengths. It minimises light pollution effects and preserves nebula detail, producing clean data for processing.
The combination of these filters allows colour-camera users to achieve Hubble Palette imaging efficiently. It enhances nebula structure, improves contrast, and enables richer colour separation in light-polluted skies.
The filters are engineered to preserve the distinctive colours of nebulae while filtering out most light pollution. Their tuned transmission profiles ensure strong signal in the target emission lines and high signal-to-noise performance for detailed deep-sky images.
This set is ideal for astrophotographers using colour cameras who want professional-quality narrowband imaging with existing equipment.
