Tele Vue Ethos 8mm

The Tele Vue Ethos 8mm was first demonstrated at NEAF in 2008. In addition to matching all the key performance criteria of its 13mm sibling, the new 8mm version is parfocal in 1¼" focusers with Radians, Plössls, Type 6 Naglers and 1¼" Panoptics.

Its lighter weight and smaller diameter than the 13mm Ethos makes the 8mm suitable for anyone using a binocular viewer. A perfect eyepiece for terrestrial viewing with a short refractor. Tele Vue is known for its in-house eyepiece and telescope designs by Al Nagler; the development of the Ethos series brought new meaning to the term "in-house." The concept for this eyepiece series was proposed by Tele Vue President David Nagler, with performance parameters giving it the fundamental characteristics (the ethos) of a Tele Vue eyepiece: high contrast, comfortable eye relief and full field sharpness. Control of astigmatism, field curvature, lateral colour, angular magnification distortion correction, and low pupil sensitivity for daytime use were specified criteria.

Following Tele Vue's philosophy of pushing the state of the art, long-time Tele Vue employee and optical design protégé Paul Dellechiaie took up the challenge and designed the basic eyepiece form. Under Al's guidance, Paul tweaked his design to fulfill the original goals.

With the Delos, the eyepiece simply "disappears" and allows the observer to observe. I could find nothing whatsoever to complain about; the "twist and tighten" eye relief adjustment feature is the best I've ever seen in any eyepiece, and the optics are essentially perfect. Tele Vue somehow always finds a way to continuously improve upon their eyepieces and the Delos is certainly no exception. The 55mm focal length has the largest true field possible for 2" eyepiece holders -3 times the true field area of any 1¼" eyepiece. The focal plane is placed at the end of the barrel to minimize vignetting. Performance with Schmidt-Cassegrains is remarkable since it avoids the image degradation and severe vignetting which occurs when using telecompressors. Long eye-relief and unique adjustable eyeguard for eyeglass wearers.

A must for deep sky fans. This good low power/wide field eyepiece has the largest true field and largest exit pupil possible for 2" eyepiece holders-3 times the field area of any 1 l/4" eyepiece.

Performance with Schmidt Cassegrains is remarkable since it avoids the image degradations and severe vignetting which occurs when using tele compressors.

The long eye relief and unique adjustable eye guard allows eyeglass wearers to see the full field of view even with their glasses on.

The rubber grip gives sure grip and makes it comfortable to use in cold weather.

An excellent premium quality low power wide field eyepiece. It is ideal for observing large emission and reflection nebulae, Supernova Remnants and large open star clusters. 

It is well-suited for any telescope with a focal ratio of f/5 or longer offering 7mm exit pupil at f/5. Works wonderfully in SCT's for large field of view. 

It has a huge 28mm of eye relief and can be used by eyeglass wearers with no vignetting of the field. This is a lot of eyepiece so its heavy weight may cause some minor concern in Dobsonians.

The Nagler eyepiece was revolutionary as the first eyepiece to deliver breath taking wide fields of view while still providing sharp images from edge to edge.

The eyepiece is an extremely important, but often over looked element in the image your telescope delivers.

In contrast to the objective of your telescope which rarely covers an image angle of more than 2°, the eyepiece has to remain sharp over an angle of more than 50°...or a staggering 82° in the case of the Nagler. For this reason extreme care must be taken to correct for aberrations - especially away from the optical axis.

Astigmatism and field curvature are 2 factors that most influence the off axis sharpness especially in "fast" objectives (below f/6). Eyepiece designers had tried for many years to eliminate these aberrations but it was not until the 1980s that a breakthrough occurred - the Nagler eyepiece.

Since then Al Nagler has refined this series of eyepieces taking advantage of different exotic glasses and improved coatings to deliver quite simply the best performance you can get out of an eyepiece. While other manufacturers may boast impressive field sizes, Televue's philosophy of "showing no field unless it is fine" stresses full field image quality as the ingredient for impressive views.

Tele Vue Nagler 22 Specifications

The TeleVue 22mm Nagler Type 4 is another of the newer improved Naglers.

The 19mm of eye relief as well as TeleVue's "Instadjust" click-stop adjustable-height eyeguard with a soft fold-down rubber eyecup allows for eyeglass wearers to experience a full 82° apparent field of view when fully retracted. The click stop increments of "Instadjust" allows non eyeglass wearer to find the exact height for full field of view images. A small plastic insert that fits in the eyeguard allows non eyeglass wearers to find the correct position of the exit pupil.

In big, fast Dobs this is an amazing medium-low power eyepiece great for open clusters, galaxy clusters and emission nebulae. Eta Carinae is totally awesome in this eyepiece.

In SCT's it offers 2.2mm exit pupil making images very bright and this is ideal for open and globular clusters. Have a look at the Tarantula Nebulae to be convinced how good this eyepiece is.

SuperView 15mm eyepieces are good for viewing open clusters, nebulae and galaxy clusters. Includes a soft rubber eyeguard.

Listed as a Sky and Telescope "Hot Product" when released, the 41mm Panoptic eyepiece is the big brother to the 24mm Panoptic (largest 1.25" field).

With its 46mm field stop, the 41mm Panoptic delivers the largest 2" field possible.

Because of its long focal length, it is brilliant in SCTs. It is ideal for observing large emission and reflection nebulae and Supernova remnants. The 19mm of eye relief means that eyeglass wearers can see the whole field of view with no vignetting. An adjustable and removable screw-type top allows quick, comfortable eye positioning. The scalloped shape gives a positive grip. It has a soft rubber eyecup for comfort which can be rolled down or left up.

Tele Vue DeLite 13mm

The Tele Vue DeLite 13mm is one of the newest additions in the DeLite series. A perfect mid powered eyepiece with 20mm Eye relief it suits an observer who wears glasses, the locking eyeguard allows you to set the position perfectly for your eyes. 62 degrees apparent field of view and sharp from edge to edge, Blackened edges and threaded for filters will make this a favourite in any collection.

Available in 18.2, 15, NEW 13mm, 11, 9, 7, 5mm 4mm and 3mm focal lengths, the DeLite series is a delightful addition to Tele Vue’s visionary line of eyepiece developments. An excellent premium-quality medium power wide field eyepiece. It is an excellent eyepiece for resolving globular clusters, planetary nebulae and very good for galaxies.

The 19mm Panoptic would be a welcome addition to any serious deep space observer’s eyepiece collection.

It only has 10mm of eye relief so eyeglass wearers may consider the 18mm TeleVue Radian with it's 20mm eye relief. However the Panoptic provides a 30% larger field of view than 18mm Radians.

Tele Vue DeLite 4mm

With 20mm eye relief the Tele Vue Delite 4mm is the perfect Planetary and Lunar eyepiece. At 216grams it will not cause balance problems in any scope. Best used in faster (f/4- f/6) scopes due to exit pupil. Edge blackened with 62 degrees apparent field, sliding, locking eyeguard to get best eye position for your eye.

The Luminos series eyepieces offer a wide 82º field of view in both high power and low power models, allowing you to make the most of your telescope, whether you own a short, fast refractor or a Celestron EdgeHD telescope. The optical set consists of six or seven elements (depending on the model) and is fully multi-coated for crisp, sharp views. All six Luminos eyepieces are parfocal, which means you can switch out eyepieces during observing sessions with little or no additional focusing required.

The Luminos eyepiece body is made of polished and anodized aluminum. A rubber grip runs around the equator of the eyepiece, giving you a secure grip and an easy method for raising and lowering the retractable eyecup. Simply twist the rubber grip to adjust the height of the eyecup. The insert barrel is threaded to accept filters.

When inserted between the eyepiece and telescope, this X-Cel 2X Barlow lens doubles the magnification of all your 1.25” eyepieces. The premium apochromatic optics yield high contrast, sharp images, virtually free of false colour.

The black anodized housing with orange highlights matches the eyepieces in the Celestron X-Cel LX line. A centralised rubber grip helps to keep your hands securely on the barrel, even when your fingers are cold or you are wearing gloves. A brass compression ring just inside the top of the X-Cel Barlow grabs your eyepiece gently but firmly when you turn the thumbscrew. Once the thumbscrew has been secured in place, the brass ring keeps your eyepiece in the Barlow instead of relying on the tip of the thumbscrew itself, offering a better grip and protecting the barrel from scratches.

Achieve precise alignment of computerized GoTo systems easily by using the relatively high-power 12.5 mm focal length eyepiece to accurately center alignment stars. The illuminated reticle enables you to precisely center alignment stars and objects in the telescope, thus increasing the accuracy of the GoTo system.

The 4-element Plossl design is also well suited for off-axis guiders, where light gathering is minimal, to help ensure tracking accuracy during guided astrophotography sessions. Celestron X-Cel LX series eyepieces offer a 60º apparent field of view, perfect for the Moon, the planets, and a plethora of deep-sky objects. The premium six-element optical set is finished with multiple layers of high-transmission coatings for clear, sharp images. The edges of the optics are blackened for increased contrast. All seven X-Cel LX eyepieces sport 16 mm of comfortable eye relief, and are parfocal, which means you can switch out eyepieces within the series during observing sessions and little or no additional focusing will be required.

The X-Cel LX eyepiece body is made of black-anodized aluminum. The pop-up eyecups make it easy to adjust the height for different users. Turn them in one direction to extend the length, and the other direction to provide a flat surface, preferable to most eyeglass wearers. A threaded rubber grip around the center of the eyepiece barrel offers secure handling, even in moist conditions or with heavy gloves on. The 1.25” insert barrel is threaded to accept filters.

Tele Vue's Delos 4.5mm is a short focal length eyepiece that will deliver high power magnification. Importantly though it still achieves a generous 20mm eye-relief and wide 72° apparent field of view. Amazing in well corrected refractors with short to medium focal lengths. High powered views without the need for a Barlows or Powermate!

There is a good chance the TeleVue Delos will be seen as the ultimate combination of performance, viewing comfort and price. If you've been keeping a spot in your case for an affordable, premium eyepiece, you should consider a Delos - you won't be disappointed! Lessons learned from the tremendously successful Ethos series were applied to develop this long eye-relief, 72° apparent field of view eyepiece line.

Background:

In 2011 Tele Vue introduced the Delos, mid-to-short focal length line of 20mm eye-relief, 72° apparent field of view eyepieces. Every optical, mechanical, and ergonomic aspect was rethought to achieve reference-standard performance for any visual application.

The Delos was conceived as a narrower field Ethos. Reducing the field to 72° allowed freedom to increase eye-relief, while controlling pupil aberrations, all without making the eyepiece too large. With Ethos performance standards as benchmarks, the Delos design achieves full field sharpness, virtually perfect f θ (theta) distortion mapping, and color neutrality. Image fidelity is maximized utilizing glass matched multicoatings and anti-reflection surfaces throughout the eyepiece.

Contrast is further enhanced with a new, continuously adjustable height eyeguard system that can be locked in any position. Since the Delos eye-lens measures a quite large 35mm in diameter, preventing stray light from reflecting off the first surface and extraneous light from entering your eye pays off in a nice increase in perceived contrast. The eyeguard's sliding action allows for positioning the soft rubber eyeguard at the ideal height to suit the observer's preference. Indicator marks on the eyepiece body are handy reference guides for setting your perfect position. The eye-guard can also rotate for Dioptrx users.
