A monochrome camera for deep-sky guiding

The ASI120MM Mini captures the guide-star frames your software uses to measure drift and send tracking corrections to your mount.

Autoguiding and planetary capture

Guide during long exposures

The 1280 × 960 monochrome sensor uses 3.75 µm pixels to sample the guide-star image. A guide scope gives the camera its own view of the sky. An off-axis guider picks up starlight through the main telescope. The guide field depends on the focal length and optical path.

Record short planetary sequences

The Mini also records monochrome planetary frames. Use a smaller region of interest when the planet fits inside it and you want more frames per second. At full resolution, ZWO’s USB 2.0 Normal Mode figures are 30 fps in RAW8 and 17.5 fps in RAW16. The capture-mode specifications list the smaller frame sizes.

Sensitivity and gain

Quantum efficiency by wavelength

Quantum efficiency (QE) is the share of photons that the sensor converts into signal. The AR0130CS curve peaks just under 80% near 580 nm, then falls towards the near infrared.

  • Near 580 nmJust under 80%

What changes as you raise gain?

Each plot uses the same gain setting along its horizontal axis. As gain rises, the read noise drops and bright pixels saturate sooner.

Full well

Signal a pixel can hold before saturation. The chart starts at 14,500 electrons at gain 0 and falls as gain rises. The vertical scale is logarithmic.

Conversion gain

Electrons per digital count, or e⁻/ADU. The curve passes near one electron per count around gain setting 29.

Dynamic range

The span from the noise floor to saturation. The chart falls from about 11 stops at gain 0 to about 6 at gain 100.

Read noise

Noise added when the sensor is read. The chart drops in steps from about 6.4 e⁻ RMS at gain 0 to about 3.6 e⁻ RMS at gain 100.

Lower gain leaves more headroom for bright stars. Higher gain can help when read noise matters in short captures and the target stays below saturation.

Fit the 1.25-inch barrel and connect the camera

Guide scope
1.25-inch slip fit. The camera fits the ZWO 30F4 Mini Guide Scope. You can start near eyepiece focus, then fine-tune on a guide star. The supplied 1.25-inch extender adds reach when needed.
Off-axis guider
Compatible 1.25-inch OAG holder. Bring the main camera and the guide camera to focus together. The Mini has 8.5 mm of sensor back focus, with a 36 mm diameter body and a net weight of 60 g.
Lens and filter fittings
Front thread M28.5 × 0.6. The supplied M28.5-to-CS adapter takes a CS-mount lens. A C-mount lens requires a separate CS-to-C adapter. A 1.25-inch filter is optional.
USB 2.0 Type-C
Connect the camera to a computer or ASIAIR. The supplied USB-C to USB-A cables carry the camera frames to the host. For computer guiding, ZWO lists PHD2 support. Windows requires the native ZWO camera driver.
ST4 autoguider
On-camera guiding to a compatible mount. If you use ST4 for guide corrections, connect the supplied ST4 cable to the mount’s autoguider port and keep the camera connected to the host by USB.
