Celestron has reinvented the manual telescope with StarSense Explorer LT 70AZ —the first telescope that uses your smartphone to analyze the night sky and calculate its position in real time. StarSense Explorer is ideal for beginners thanks to the app’s user-friendly interface and detailed tutorials. It’s like having your own personal tour guide of the night sky.
- Unleash the power of your smartphone to take you on a guided tour of the night sky—no telescope experience required.
- Patent-pending StarSense sky recognition technology uses your smartphone to analyze star patterns overhead and calculate its position in real time. Check phone compatibility here.
- StarSense Explorer app automatically generates a list of objects currently visible. View planets, brighter nebulae and galaxies, star clusters, and double stars from the city. Or take your telescope to darker skies to view faint, deep sky objects.
- Manual altazimuth mount with smooth, dual-axis slow-motion controls makes it easy to follow the on-screen arrows to your desired target. When the bullseye turns green, it’s ready to view in the telescope’s eyepiece.
- 70mm refractor with fully coated glass optics for bright, sharp views.
- Includes 25mm and 10mm eyepieces, 2x Barlow Lens, StarSense smartphone dock, erect image diagonal, a red dot finderscope (in case you want to use the telescope without your phone), and a full-height tripod.
Dock, Launch, Explore
Leave complicated star charts, imprecise planetarium apps, and computerized mounts behind. With StarSense Explorer LT 70AZ, locating objects has never been easier, faster, or more accurate. Within minutes of setting up the telescope, you’ll be navigating the sky with confidence. Simply place your phone in the unique StarSense dock and launch the StarSense Explorer app. After aligning your phone to the telescope’s optics (a quick, 2-minute procedure), StarSense Explorer generates a list of celestial objects currently visible. Make your selection and arrows appear onscreen, guiding you as you to move the telescope. When the object is ready to view, the bullseye turns green.

Smartphone Compatibility
StarSense Explorer LT 70AZ works with most modern smartphones, including iPhone 6 and up and most devices running Android 7.1.2 or later manufactured since 2016. For a complete compatibility list, click here.
Patent-Pending StarSense Sky Recognition Technology
StarSense Explorer LT 70AZ uses patent-pending technology and your smartphone to determine exactly where the telescope is pointed in the night sky. A Lost in Space Algorithm (LISA), like the ones satellites use in orbit to correctly reorient themselves, helps the app match star patterns it detects overhead to its internal database.
While other astronomy apps may claim that they can help you find objects, they rely exclusively on the phone’s gyros and accelerometers, which aren’t as accurate as LISA technology. No other app can accurately tell you when your target is visible in the eyepiece.
Sturdy Altazimuth Mount
StarSense Explorer LT’s simple altazimuth mount makes it easy to move the telescope to find your target. A slow-motion altitude adjustment knob helps you fine tune the telescope’s pointing position and follow targets as they appear to drift across the night sky. It’s all anchored by an adjustable, full-height tripod.
Dazzling Views with High Quality Optics
You can expect sharp, bright views through this 70mm refractor. Fully coated glass optics provide increased light transmission, enhancing details in celestial objects. The telescope also includes a 90-degree erect image diagonal, so you can use it during the day to view birds, wildlife, landscapes, and more.
Perfect for the City or Dark Sky Sites
Even if you live in a light polluted city location, StarSense Explorer is advanced enough to be able to pick out Jupiter, Saturn, Venus, the Orion Nebula, double stars, and a few more of the most famous celestial objects.
But if you can take the telescope to an even slightly darker location, more objects will become visible. The entire telescope kit weighs just 7.4 pounds, so it’s perfectly portable and easy to bring on your next camping trip or to a remote observing site.
Everything You Need to Observe Immediately
When you unbox your new StarSense Explorer LT, you’ll find:
- 70mm refractor optical tube
- StarSense dock for your smartphone
- Low powered (25mm) and high powered (10mm) eyepiece
- 2x Barlow lens to double the power of each eyepiece
- 90-degree erect image diagonal

The Celestron 1.25” Eyepiece and Filter Kit is a great way to expand the functionality and enjoyment of your telescope. Inside the metal, foam-lined carry case you’ll find these accessories:
- 32 mm Plossl Eyepiece - 1.25”
- 17 mm Plossl Eyepiece - 1.25”
- 13 mm Plossl Eyepiece - 1.25”
- 8 mm Plossl Eyepiece - 1.25”
- 6 mm Plossl Eyepiece - 1.25”
- 2X Barlow Lens - 1.25”
- #80A Blue Filter - 1.25”
- #58A Green Filter - 1.25”
- #56 Light Green Filter - 1.25”
- #25 Red Filter - 1.25”
- #21 Orange Filter - 1.25”
- #12 Yellow Filter - 1.25”
- Moon Filter - 1.25”
Eyepieces - All five Plossl eyepieces can be used in any telescope with a 1.25” focuser. Each eyepiece features a four-element design with a 52º apparent field of view. The optics are fully multi-coated to improve light transmission and protect the optics. The 32 mm Plossl eyepiece offers a low power, wide field view in most telescopes, the 13 mm & 17 mm focal lengths are good medium-power oculars, and the 8 mm & 6 mm eyepieces provide high magnifications, great for the Moon and planets, especially when seeing conditions are good.
2X Barlow Lens - The included, and very versatile 2X Barlow doubles the magnification of any 1.25” eyepiece. Since this kit includes five (5) eyepieces, you will be able to use them with and without the Barlow, giving you a total of ten magnification options in all. Any other 1.25” eyepieces you already have will also work in this desirable accessory, giving you even more magnification choices. Remember, high magnifications do not always produce clear, sharp results, especially on evenings of poor or moderate seeing conditions. Experiment to find the magnifications that are best for your telescope on a particular night.
Filters - Colored filters can be used to bring out certain details on a planet’s surface or its cloud structure. All of the planetary filters included in the 1.25” Eyepiece & Accessory Kit, as well as the Moon filter, can be used on any 1.25” eyepiece with the proper filter threads, so they are very versatile. Just screw one onto your eyepiece of choice and slide it into the focuser.
The Moon filter is one of the first accessories most new amateur astronomers buy, and for good reason! It helps block out a portion of the light the Moon sends into your eyepiece so that you can see details better. You can also try this filter on Venus; it blocks enough glare so you can observe the planet’s phases more easily.
Metal Case: The sturdy metal carry case has die-cut foam inside to protect and cushion your accessories. Store each one in its appointed place when not in use and you’ll keep them looking and performing like new. The case is even large enough to carry a few extra accessories. Just pull out enough of the foam cubes to make a nest for your eyepiece, camera adapter, etc. A tight fit is better, so remove the least amount of foam possible before testing the fit. You can always remove more if you need to.
Camera Sensor
The ASI120MM Mini camera integrates the AR0130CS 1/3″ sensor (4.8 mm x 3.6 mm). It is a new model in the “mini”-series of cameras from ZWO. This camera has 1280 x 960 pixels with a pixel size of 3.75 μm x 3.75 μm. It provides 12-bit ADC and the QE peak is almost 80%.
Astrophotography Performance
The ASI120 mini-camera offers you very good performance for planetary imaging as well as for guiding. Low read noise, high dynamic range, AR protective window and much more are just some of the key characteristics that set it apart from the competition.

High QE
Absolute QE Curve, we estimate the Peak Value is almost 80%.
120Mini VS 120MM-S
Compared with ASI120MM-S camera, 120mini have smaller outlook, lighter weight, and it can reach focus at same position with eyepiece.
USB2.0Port & ST4 Port
USB 2.0 Port: Mini camera has one USB2.0 type C port. Type C port is very popular in mobile phones, it will not care about positive side and negetive side of the adapter.
ST4 Port: Can connect mini camera direct connect to auto guide port of mount.
The back of ASI mini camera is like a smiling face, its mouth is Type C USB port, which is widely used in mobile phones. And its nose is the ST4 port, for guiding. Every time, you use mini camera, there always will be a smiley face stay with you in the dark nights.
ASI mini camera can focus at same position as eyepiece. You can focus with a eyepiece, and put ASI mini camera into 1.25″ holder.
Mini camera is very suitable for OAG, it has much bigger focus range than normal ASI cameras. Never to worry about that guide camera can not focus with main camera at same time.
What is in the box?
ASI mini camera box includes all necessary cables, adapters, and manuals.

You can expect sharp, bright views through this 80mm refractor.
The entire telescope kit weighs just 9.2 pounds, so it’s perfectly portable and easy to bring on your next camping trip or to a remote observing site.

You can expect sharp, bright views of Jupiter’s four Galilean moons, its cloud bands and Great Red Spot, the rings of Saturn, the trapezium in the Orion Nebula, and beautiful Pleaides Open Star Cluster. Highly reflective coatings on both the primary and secondary mirror enhance the views even more.
With this 5” Newtonian and relatively dark skies, the Omega Centauri, The Orion Nebula, and so many more are easily within your reach.
The entire telescope kit weighs just over 8kg, so it’s perfectly portable and easy to bring on your next camping trip or to a remote observing site.

The self-alignment technology behind Celestron's award-winning SkyProdigy series is now available for all their current computerized telescopes, and backwards compatible with many older models as well (see compatibility list below). A small digital camera takes the place of your finderscope and attaches using one of two provided mounting brackets. The included StarSense hand control takes the place of your NexStar hand control. The camera automatically captures a series of images of the sky. StarSense identifies the stars in the images, matching them to its database. Once a positive match is confirmed, it calculates the coordinates of the centre of the captured image, thereby determining exactly where the telescope is pointed.
Before this technology, using a computerized telescope required a lengthy alignment process of finding and centering at least two bright stars in the telescope’s eyepiece. But StarSense automatically aligns itself with minimal user input. Just enter your time, date, and location, and let StarSense do the rest! Watch the video below for more information.

$849.00
More sky. In your hands.
A dual-camera smart telescope with 737mm of reach, a Sony STARVIS 2 sensor, and a full astrophotography studio built into the app. From deep-sky nebulae to birds in flight, it does it all from a 1.3kg body.
Galaxies and nebulae, clearly within reach.
The 737mm telephoto and STARVIS 2 sensor pull faint deep-sky targets out of the dark. Andromeda, the Orion Nebula, the Veil, the Pleiades. Point, capture, and the DWARF 3 stacks frame after frame into a clean, detailed image.
More optics, more sensor, more battery. The smart telescope, fully grown.
Tap your phone. Start shooting.
NFC one-touch pairing connects your phone in seconds. Pick a target from the star chart or point your phone at the sky, and the DWARF 3 finds it and locks on. No alignment ritual first.
It locates and tracks for you.
Choose an object and the DWARF 3 slews to it, focuses, and tracks it as Earth turns. A field-rotation-correction algorithm keeps stars round through the whole session, so framing never drifts.
60-second exposures, four times longer.
On a polar-aligned tripod, EQ mode eliminates field rotation and unlocks exposures up to four times longer. More light per frame means richer detail in faint nebulae and galaxies.
A filter for every sky.
Switch between VIS for daytime, an astro filter for deep space, and a dual-narrowband Hα / O III filter that cuts city light pollution. A magnetic solar filter is included for safe imaging of the Sun.
A studio inside the app.
One-click optimisation, noise reduction, star calibration, and even star removal run on your phone. No laptop and no expensive software needed to turn raw frames into a share-ready image.
A whole observatory at 1.3kg.
Dictionary-sized and around 1.3kg, the DWARF 3 packs into its included carry bag and travels anywhere. Backyard, campsite, or a dark-sky weekend, it is ready when the sky is.
Two lenses. Sky and landscape.
A 6-element apochromatic telephoto reaches 737mm equivalent for deep-sky and close detail. A wide-angle lens frames the Milky Way, panoramas, and fast-moving subjects. Every mode now works on both lenses, and you switch between them with one tap.
Look up. Tap once. Capture it.
From the Moon to the far edges of deep space, the DWARF 3 turns a clear night into a finished photograph.
Built to see in the dark.
The 8.3-megapixel STARVIS 2 sensor reaches 83% quantum efficiency with just 0.6e− read noise and 12-bit output. It gathers more faint light with less noise, so nebulae come through layered and smooth rather than grainy.
Set it tonight. Sleep through it.
Plan a target and start time in advance and the DWARF 3 begins on its own. No staying up all night, and no missing a narrow window when the object is highest.
Stack across nights for depth.
Combine results from different sessions into one cleaner, higher-resolution image. A faint target keeps improving across many nights, far beyond what a single evening can gather.
Four times the frame.
A 2×2 stitching mode expands a single field to four times its area. Rotate and zoom to compose freely and capture a large nebula complete, edge to edge, in one panorama.
Tune the colour in-app.
Built-in curve grading adjusts the RGB channels individually to rebalance colour and restore the true tones of stars and nebulae. Fine control without leaving your phone.
Add your watermark, then share.
Apply a personal watermark before posting so a finished shot is unmistakably yours. From capture to a share-ready image without ever opening a computer.
Export RAW for full control.
Save in JPG and PNG for quick sharing, or FITS and TIFF for serious post-processing in Siril or PixInsight. The DWARF 3 suits beginners and experienced imagers alike.
Not just for the night.
An AI neural-processing unit recognises and tracks wildlife automatically, with continuous autofocus that holds a moving bird sharp. If it takes off, the dual-camera system quickly repositions and stays with it.
One device, every subject.
Stitch the whole scene.
AI stitching blends many frames into a seamless gigapixel panorama with no visible joins. An ultra-wide field with massive detail, so you can zoom right in and it stays sharp.
Safe solar, crisp lunar.
The included magnetic solar filter lets you image the Sun safely, from sunspots to eclipses. Turn to the Moon for sharp, detailed craters along the terminator on any clear night.
Wide-field nightscapes.
Point at the Milky Way for one-click capture with automatic foreground separation and stacking. Switch off tracking for star-trail mode that blends the landscape with the sky's turning arcs.
Daily targets, picked for you.
The app recommends what is worth shooting each night based on your sky. Tap a suggestion and go straight from choosing a target to capturing it, with no guesswork.
Dual apochromatic cameras: 737mm equivalent telephoto plus a 45mm equivalent wide-angle.
Sony IMX678 STARVIS 2 sensor, 8.3 MP, 2μm pixels, 83% quantum efficiency.
Built-in VIS, astro, and dual-narrowband filters, plus an included magnetic solar filter.
Equatorial mode unlocks exposures up to four times longer with no field rotation.
10,000mAh battery for up to 5.5 hours, plus 128GB of onboard storage.
NFC one-touch pairing and full app control for iOS and Android.
Exports JPG, PNG, FITS, and TIFF for sharing or advanced post-processing.
Doubles as a daytime instrument for birdwatching, wildlife, and gigapixel panoramas.
Every number that matters.
A complete imaging kit, in one small body.
Celestron has reinvented the manual telescope with StarSense Explorer DX 6 —the first telescope that uses your smartphone to analyze the night sky and calculate its position in real time. StarSense Explorer DX 6 is ideal for beginners thanks to the app’s user-friendly interface and detailed tutorials. It’s like having your own personal tour guide of the night sky.
Dock, Launch, Explore
Leave complicated star charts, imprecise planetarium apps, and computerized mounts behind. With StarSense Explorer, locating objects has never been easier, faster, or more accurate.
StarSense Explorer works with most modern smartphones, including iPhone 6 and up and most devices running Android 7.1.2 or later manufactured since 2016.
Patent-Pending StarSense Sky Recognition Technology
StarSense Explorer uses patent-pending technology and your smartphone to determine exactly where the telescope is pointed in the night sky.
High Quality Altazimuth Mount with Slow Motion Control
An ultra-stable altazimuth mount provides a sturdy foundation for StarSense Explorer DX. Slip clutches and geared slow motion controls in both axes help you move the telescope smoothly and zero in your target. As celestial objects appear to drift across the night sky, you’ll be able to follow them with just a turn of the knobs. It’s all anchored by an adjustable, full-height tripod.
Dazzling Views with High Quality Optics
With a large 6” Schmidt-Cassegrain optical tube—Celestron’s tried-and-true optical design for over 50 years—this telescope has enough light gathering ability to bring out impressive detail in celestial objects while remaining compact and lightweight. You can expect sharp, bright views of Jupiter’s four Galilean moons, its cloud bands and Great Red Spot, the rings of Saturn, the trapezium in the Orion Nebula, and the beautiful Pleaides Open Star Cluster.
All air-to-glass surfaces are coated with our StarBright XLT optical coatings to visibly increase contrast and light transmission for brighter deep space views. With StarBright XLT, you’ll be able to discern subtle details while viewing the Moon and planets as well as faint galaxies and nebulae. For more information about our patented StarBright XLT coatings.
With this 6” Schmidt-Cassegrain and relatively dark skies, the Andromeda Galaxy, Hercules Open Star Cluster, and so many more are easily within your reach.

The power cord has been fused at 7 amps even though the controller is capable of amperages of 5 amps per channel (10 amps total). We do not recommend replacing the power cord fuse with a larger fuse as the power input socket is not rated for higher amperage.
The Standard Dual Channel has many new features but remains really simple to use. As well, it can handle more power and use that power more efficiently! This newest addition to Kendrick's Dew Remover Systems is sure to be a hit!
If you do not need to run more than 2 heater strips and are using smaller heater strips please consider the Kendrick Micro Controller. For ultimate control of dew, we recommend the DigiFire 8 and 12 controllers that feature digital control and also temperature sensing on the DigiFire 12.

The Tele Vue 2x Barlow provides double the magnification when used with any 1.25" eyepiece in your collection. For more magnification check out the Tele Vue 3x Barlow.
The chart below shows the effective magnification when spacing is introduced between the Barlow lens and image plane of your camera or eyepiece
Properly designed Barlows do wonderful things: They amplify power, slow the telescope's f/# (improving eyepiece sharpness), and give designers the opportunity to compensate for eyepiece aberrations.
Tele Vue Barlows use multi-coated high index glasses for optimum aberration correction, exceptional contrast with virtually no light loss. Observed performance is aberration free, even when tested with f/4 scopes. They even improve our competitor's eyepieces and telescopes!
Compromise image quality in any part of the optical chain and you've compromised every part! Tele Vue product design and execution deliver consummate satisfaction. Every Tele Vue Barlow must pass the same rigorous f/4, full field testing as all our eyepieces.
All Tele Vue Barlows now use brass clamp rings for secure, non marring holding of eyepieces and accessories.
Offered in 2x and 3x magnifications, these 1¼" Barlows perform identically. Simply choose either or both based on your eyepiece collection. Features include parfocal-ization, 1¼" filter threads, captive lock screws that won't fall out and full multicoatings.

Product Description
ASI294MC Pro
The ASI294 is the first camera in the world equipped with the latest Sony sensor IMX294CJK.
▶IMX294CJK
Sony 10.71M-Effective Pixel Color CMOS Image Sensor (official description from Sony site), with a diagonal of 21.63mm (4/3 format). ZWO has refined the sensor and remolded it to increase the diagonal to 23.2mm with approximately 11.71M-Effective pixels (4/3 format).
▶High-Sensitivity Type 4/3 CMOS Image Sensor that Supports 4K for Astronomic Cameras and Industrial Applications
The IMX294CJK sensor is the first in-house image sensor for astronomic cameras to adopt the 4/3 format and provides the necessary number of pixels for true 4k output at 120 frames per second (w/ ADC 10-bit output mode, the ASI294MC can run up to 25fps at 4k format when used with USB 3.0). In addition, the use of larger-sized pixels achieves SNR1s (link this to Sony’s page on SNR1s, so people know what it means) of 0.14 lx* which is very close to the value of the ASI224 (0.13 lx*).
▶Exceptional low-illumination performance
Exceptional low-illumination performance of SNR: 0.14 lx is realized by use of a large-size optical system and by expanding the area per pixel to 4.63 µm. This makes the IMX294CJK ideal for astronomic camera market applications that require low-illumination performance.
DDR Memory Buffer
The ASI294MC Pro camera includes a 256MB DDR3 memory buffer to help improve data transfer reliability. Additionally, the use of a memory buffer minimizes amp-glow, which is caused by the slow transfer speeds when the camera is used with a USB 2.0 port.
DDR memory buffer is the main difference between ASI “Cool” and “Pro” cameras.
14bit ADC w/ 13 stops DR
The ASI294 has a 14bit ADC unit, allowing it to achieve 13 stops of dynamic range. This is an excellent characteristic for deep sky imaging, which is inherently high dynamic range. At 13 stops, the ASI294 has even more dynamic range than the ASI1600.
HCG Mode
HCG (high conversion gain) mode, which reduces read noise to even lower levels at higher gain without loss to dynamic range, is automatically enabled when the gain setting is 120 or higher. Read noise will drop under 2e-, while dynamic range will remain at 13 stops.
63700e full well, which is 3 times than ASI1600’s capacity. Even bright stars won’t saturate under long exposure.
This camera can achieve higher SNR(signal to noise ratio) with just one single exposure.
Reliable Mechanics
ASI294MC Pro has same mechanics as ASI1600 Pro. There are four screws that seal the sensor chamber. Our camera design has been extensively tested and is very stable.
Even when used in higher humidity environments, ASI294MC Pro will still work fine without dew problems.
High QE
The IMX294 sensor is a BSI (backside illuminated type) sensor, which has very high QE (quantum efficiency, which we estimate is over 75% peak).
Dark Current
The dark current of the ASI294 is slightly higher than the ASI1600, based on our test results.
Dark frame sample @ Highest dynamic range settings, 300s, -10°C, bin1. Please check the dark frame to make sure you fully know the performance.
USB 3.0 Port & USB2.0 HUB
USB 3.0 Port: Provide 5Gb bandwidth to make it possible for ASI294 Pro to run at 16 fps (14bit, normal mode) or 19 fps (10bit, high speed mode) at full resolution(11.7Mega).
Recommended cooler power supply: 12V @ 3-5A (or more) DC adapter (2.1×5.5mm, center pole positive). Also suitable: DC battery with 9-15V. Buy the power supply from Bintel too!
Using a battery 9-15V is also suitable for the cooler power supply.
USB 2.0 HUB: can connect with various accessories, such as filter wheel, guide camera and electronic focuser, so you can better manage your cables. The ASI294 Pro includes two short 0.5m USB 2.0 cables. The integrated USB 2.0 hub is powered by the external power source if you connect one.
Cooling System
The ASI294 Pro has a 2-stage TEC cooling system that enables deep cooling (35°C-40°C below ambient). The cooler requires an external power supply, which is not included with the camera. You may order a suitable power supply from Bintel here.

The SkyWatcher Dobsonian 6 Inch Telescope 153mm/1200mm has a "parabolic" primary mirror to eliminate spherical aberration and a four-arm, secondary- mirror bracket with fine supports (0.5mm thick), to reduce diffraction spikes and light loss. In addition, this model includes a 2" focuser with a 1.25" adapter, allowing the use of either eyepiece size. This model also includes a new feature - tension control handles allow an adjustment of the level of friction applied during use.
WHAT is a Dobsonian Telescope and WHY are they so damn cheap!?
A simple, elegant form of an alt-azimuth mount made to carry a Newtonian reflector was popularised by John Dobson in the late 1970's. The Dobsonian mounted telescope is most popular among amateur astronomers and telescope makers because of its simplicity. The metal tube is almost entirely empty, save for the large primary mirror at the bottom. A ground-based mount replaces the expensive tripod found under most other telescopes, but still allows full pivot and swivel motions. This build saves hundreds of dollars compared to equivalently-sized 6 inch SCT or refractor telescopes, and you end up being able to see the same level of detail for a fraction of the cost!
So, what's the catch?
Dobsonian telescopes are large and bulky. This means they are difficult to store and transport. If you need something small and easily portable, tripod mounted refractors and cassegrains are a much better option (although at a higher cost). Otherwise, you should seriously considering buying a Dobsonian, because the details you can see through one are truly out of this world.

CELESTRON REDUCER/CORRECTOR F/6.3
This combination focal reducer and field corrector lens accessory works with all Celestron 5", 6", 8", 9 1/4", 11" and 14" Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes. This clever accessory makes it possible to have a dual focal ratio instrument, without sacrificing image quality. The Reducer/Corrector is f/6.3 for C5, C6, C8, C9¼ and C11 telescopes and f/7 for the C14 telescope.
If offers wide fields of view with any Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope. Used for astrophotography, it reduces exposure time by a factor of 3.
Celestron doesn’t offer a f/6.3 Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope, because the design is impractical, with a large central obstruction, and resulting loss in contrast. This, added to the inability to utilize longer focal ratios for certain objects, led Celestron to design the four-element, fully multicoated f/6.3 Reducer/Corrector. Results are amazing both visually and photographically.
Produces a corrected field of 24mm diameter. The back focus is 105mm, from the reducer's back element to the camera's sensor
THE #94175 REDUCER/CORRECTOR LENS IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH CELESTRON EDGEHD or MEADE ACF OPTICAL SYSTEMS.

The Tele Vue Powermate 2.5x is the perfect choice for both imaging and visual use.
Unique Benefits and Applications for Powermates™
- Vignetting, edge field aberrations and pupil movement - all introduced when using Barlows with long focal length eyepieces, are minimized.
- Telecentric operation (field rays leave parallel to optical axis, unlike Barlow lenses which diverge rays). This is ideal for Hydrogen-alpha filter use such as with Daystar models.
- High performance for image amplification, CCD or film (some of the finest Earth-based planetary imaging is being done with Powermates™ ).
- Flexible for visual and imaging with all types of telescopes and eyepieces. Essentially Parfocal, and with nearly constant magnification regardless of image distance behind top surface (except 5x model which increases 1x for every 35mm of image distance increase).
- Higher magnifications are possible with high optical performance compared to "doubling up" Barlows.
- All will reach parfocal point in star diagonals, except for the 2", 2x which comes very close.
In addition to full multi-coating, Powermates™ include other Tele Vue special touches such as safety undercuts where practical on the chrome barrel and captive lock screws that can't fall out, and filter threads. Our 100% QC program at f/4 insures that Powermates™ will add dramatic power (and NOTHING ELSE) to your favorite eyepieces.
If, for example, you own a 24mm Panoptic, you'll have the power of a 12mm focal length eyepiece with the 2.0x Powermate™, 9.6mm with the 2.5x Powermate™, a 6mm with the 4x Powermate™, or a 4.8mm with the 5x Powermate™!
Some of the finest Solar System images have been made with Powermates™. Used singly or stacked, Powermates™ help any scope achieve the long focal-length required to image details on Solar System bodies. The increased image scale allows for imaging without an intervening eyepiece -- like in prime focus photography. Powermate T-Ring Adapters fit on the Powermate lens assemblies to allow attachment of your camera's T-Ring or other T-threaded imaging accessory.
For astro-imagers, the above chart indicates the magnification for each Powermate™ (2x, 2.5x, 4x & 5x) as a function of distance from the Powermate™ top surface to the imaging surface (CCD or film).
These models stand less than 3" out of your focuser and the 5x takes 1¼" threaded filters. They are parfocal in ALL 1¼" diagonals and prisms. For this reason, they are highly recommended over standard Barlows for 1¼" diagonals and refractors such as the Tele Vue-60.
The 5x Powermate™ is ideal for long focus CCD and film photography, magnifying about 7.7x. It's an attractive, high performance alternative to eyepiece projection. The 5x is also perfect for slowing down your scope for Hydrogen-Alpha solar observing.
These Powermates™ are a better choice for 2" diagonals than Barlows, since they are nearly Parfocal. They are threaded for 48mm filters and their performance is excellent with every 1¼" and 2" eyepiece we make (yes, even the 31mm Nagler Type 5!). Both the 2" eyepiece holder and the special 2" flat top adapter use our brass clamp rings for secure operation. And, it also has a very unique feature: you can unscrew the 2" eyepiece housing and screw on a special T-ring adapter for solid, compact attachment of CCD or camera equipment.
Excellent with long eye-relief, 2" eyepieces. Using the 4x model, imagine the quality of a 35mm Panoptic at 8.8mm with 25mm of eye relief! The Powermate™ is NOT a Barlow so the Panoptic-Barlow Interface is not needed! The 2" Powermate™ fits all the way into 2" Star Diagonals, requiring minimal refocus compared to a 2" Barlow.
When using Tele Vue's Paracorr coma corrector, the 2.5x or 5x Powermate™ should be inserted into the Paracorr's 1¼" adapter (i.e., between the Paracorr and the eyepiece). For 2x and 4x 2" Powermates™, first insert the Powermate™ into the focuser, then the Paracorr into the Powermates™.
Al Nagler's 4-element concept, continues the tradition of full-field sharpness with optimum aberration control. Like long eye-relief? Retain the eye-relief of long focal length eyepieces, while at high power. Enjoy, for example, the sharpness and comfort of the 32mm Plössl at up to 5 times the power!
To understand the Powermate™, we must first understand the Barlow lens. Barlows amplify the power of a telescope. They can be considered "focal reducers" for eyepieces, or "focal extenders" for objectives. Terence Dickenson, in his Barlow test report in Sky and Telescope, July 1997, says: "Technology has erased the old objections. A modern Barlow will not degrade your telescope's optics. Anyone telling you otherwise is using outdated information. Moreover, the highly regarded Nagler eyepieces and their clones have built-in Barlows, ample evidence that the lens is not some detrimental intruder." Thanks, Terence, for laying the myth of the degrading Barlow to rest.
A high quality Barlow must be properly designed and manufactured in order to avoid compromising a telescope's color and spherical aberration corrections. The "invisibility" of Tele Vue's 2-element Barlows has been noted in test reports in the astronomy magazines. However, by the nature of its negative power lens, a Barlow will do more than just increase magnification, regardless of the number of elements.
The diverging rays leaving the Barlow result in moving the exit pupil further out, thereby extending the eye relief. In short to medium focal length eyepieces the change is not noticeable. However, in the case of long focal length eyepieces, the increase can be significant and not without performance consequences.
Vignetting can occur due to the altered ray path, when the eyepiece's lenses are not large enough in diameter to allow all the rays to make it through. Shorter Barlows, or ones with too much magnification, only exacerbate the problem because the ray path entering the eyepiece is steeper.
We had to go beyond the Barlow concept to achieve the goal of a compact, high power, fully corrected image amplifier. The Powermate™ consists of a negative doublet plus a positive "pupil-correcting" doublet. This 4-element system provides the magnifying function of a Barlow without its limitations by restoring the field rays back to their original direction, as if the Powermate™ were not there. The result is a pure magnification increase.
