Designed to fit 32mm counterweight shafts
Sturdy lock knob keeps the counterweight safely on the shaft

Whether you are enhancing your mount setup or buying a replacement part, the counterweight is there to balance weight of the optical tube (OTA) and accessories on the other side of the Right Accession (RA Axis). If you add accessories to your telescope setup (ie camera, guider, etc), you may need to add additional counterweights to off-set the weight.

If the balance is off on one-side or the other, it can do damage to your OTA and setup, the motor gear, and/or may have issues with tracking accuracy. You can add additional counterweights to improve the responsiveness to the system by reducing the mass inertia, though you need to make sure you space out the counterweights along the shaft to reduce damage to your setup and that it is cost-effective and worth it for your telescope setup.

This counterweight comes with a sturdy knurled knob locks to safely hold in place on the counterweight shaft. The counterweight is designed to fit 32mm counterweight shafts

The UHC-E Filter increases contrast of emission nebulae and comets and blocks the light of typical streetlights as well as airglow. It is best suited for telescopes up to 5" / 125mm.

Main use

The Astronomik UHC-E filter provides a FWHM of 45nm and blocks the light of typical streetlights (e.g. sodium and mercury vapour) as well as airglow. Thus it increases contrast between your target and the night sky. The contrast enhancement is less than that of the Astronomik UHC filter, but at the same time the transmitted amount of starlight is greater. It's therefore better suited to smaller telescopes. As the UHC-E filter passes a spectral line of Carbon (due to the higher FWHM) it opens up the possibility of comet observation.

Other uses

Observation of Jupiter’s clouds.
Easier resolution of Double Stars.
Photography under light-polluted skies with DSLRs and other cameras.

A ring spacer placed around the objective lens refines star images beautifully in astrophotography.

In the previous SD81S model, a set of three tiny tin foils are placed around the objective lens as a spacer between the doublet lens. The end of the tin foils protruding over the objective lens obstruct the incoming light. As a result, the protruding tin foils make the light of diffraction of stars chipped radially. Exchanging the tin foils for the spacer ring makes the diffraction of the stars' light equal. It allows you to create more refined and beautiful star images in your astrophotography.

The SD lens suppresses residual chromatic aberration far below the threshold of visibility.

A lens of refracting telescopes has chromatic aberration which is caused by different wavelength of visible light (colors) focusing at different distances. The Vixen SD lenses, made of FPL53 super extra-low dispersion glass, allow for correcting the chromatic aberration over a wide spectrum of light. The SD81SII delivers outstandingly sharp images with high contrast for both visual and photographic applications. Moderately bright F7.7 images will satisfy the most demanding visual astronomer or astrophotographer.

A short optical tube in length is handy for not only visual observation but also astrophotography.

The ED81SII optical tube has a moderate short length to enable you to carry and set it up readily. Also, a lightweight optical tube allows you to balance it with fewer counterweights. The ED81S comes equipped with a metal carry handle and the Vixen standard dovetail slide bar M for quick attaching and detaching. The provided Flip mirror diagonal switches incoming light to allow for using two eyepieces of different magnifications alternately. Also, you can install a camera on the straight side and view an image through an eyepiece on the right-angled side of the flip mirror diagonal.

Using an SD reducer HD kit or an SD Flattener SD kit, which are available optionally, the SD80SII provides an image circle of 44mm, adequate for taking photos with a DSLR camera. (Photo) M8, M20 nebulae taken with Vixen SD81SII with SD reducer HD kit (compound focus 496mm) and Pentax K-1 at ISO1600, 49 minutes exposure.

Optional accessories to expand your pleasure of taking astrophotography.

SD Reducer HD Kit: This kit includes a flattener lens to be combined with a reducer lens for a flat and wide imaging field when you use them with the SD81SII, SD103SII, or SD115SII optical tube. The reducer lens reduces a focal length by 0.7X. Direct Wide Photo Adapter 60DX: It is available for Canon EOS or Nikon DSLR cameras. It is possible to change the orientation of a camera for a framing of the photographic field.

High precision camera adapters for prime focus astrophotography are optionally available for Canon EOS and Nikon. The Wide Photo Adapter 60DX is designed to be an integrated camera mount reducing vignetting to the maximum. The built-in Class 1 eye-safe laser rangefinder reads distance to 1,500 m with ±1 m precision, in complete darkness, without disturbing your subject. Switch metres and yards on the fly. No separate device to carry or fumble for.

Zoom without compromise

2–16× zoom. Detail at every level.

A 1280×1024 sensor behind 2–16× digital zoom means maximum magnification doesn’t mean maximum pixellation. Distant birds and animals retain identifying detail at full zoom, day surveys or overnight.

Dual battery system

At f/2.75, the DeltaRho 280 gathers light 13 times faster than an f/10 instrument of identical aperture. That is not an incremental advantage — it is the difference between a productive one-hour session and a week of cloud-interrupted integration. Research programmes and sky surveys that would otherwise take months become achievable in a single season.

Mirrors

Primary and secondary mirrors are optical-grade fused silica quartz — near-zero thermal expansion, the same material used in premier research observatories. As temperature drops through the night, conventional glass mirrors shift focus. The DR280’s quartz mirrors do not.

Optical speed

f/2.8 native. The SCT form factor finally fast.

A conventional 8-inch SCT runs at f/10. The FSCT8 runs at f/2.8 natively — no reducer stacks, no optical compromises. That is a 13-fold increase in photon-gathering speed. A four-hour integration target becomes roughly 20 minutes of effective exposure. For imagers working under Australian skies with limited clear nights, this is the most impactful single step up possible.

Mirrors

Quartz mirrors. Focus doesn’t move.

Primary (210 mm) and secondary (114 mm) mirrors are both fused silica quartz — the same glass used in research-grade observatories. Near-zero thermal expansion means the focus point does not drift as temperature drops. Your collimation is still correct at 3 am.

Structure

267 mm OTA. Fits where full-size SCTs don’t.

The carbon-fibre upper cage is rigid, thermally stable, and keeps total OTA length at just 267 mm. That is shorter than many refractors. It mounts on mid-range equatorial platforms and travels as carry-on — without sacrificing the optical performance of a full 8-inch system.

Corrector

Flat field. Corner to corner. No caveats.

The 88 mm broadband AR-coated corrector lens flattens the focal plane and holds sub-6.2 μm RMS optical performance across the full 42 mm image circle — from dead-centre to the corner of a full APS-C sensor.

Back focus and image scale

Your full imaging train. No extensions required.

A 100 mm back focus from the mounting surface accommodates camera, filter wheel, electronic focuser, and off-axis guider without extension tubes. The 2.75 μm per arcsecond image scale is matched to modern small-pixel CMOS sensors — making the most of every pixel in the frame.

Observable Space

Purpose-built for imaging. Not retrofitted for it.

Observable Space — the PlaneWave and OurSky collaboration — built the FSCT8 as an imaging instrument from the ground up. Mirror material, corrector geometry, tube construction, back focus distance: every decision serves the astrophotographer. This is not a visual SCT with a reducer bolted on. It is a dedicated astrograph that fits in a carry-on bag.

In general, observing an object from a close distance with a pair of binoculars causes a discrepancy in the visual field between the right and left eyes. In order to compensate for this discrepancy, the Papilio III WR incorporates the PENTAX-original convergence correction mechanism, which slides the objective lenses in conjunction with the focusing distance. This unique mechanism lets the user more comfortably observe subjects at close range without suffering eye fatigue.

Since the objective lenses returns to their original position in long-range observation, this model also performs superbly in normal applications, such as birdwatching, hiking, concerts and sports viewing.

The first Papilio-series model to feature a weather-resistant construction

For the first time in the Papilio series, the Papilio III WR features a weather-resistant construction which minimizes the intrusion of water and moisture into the interior, making it a highly dependable observation tool in the rain and mist and at locations prone to water splashes. An anti-stain coating has also been applied to the eyepieces and front plate-glass surfaces to minimize the adhesion of dust and stains.

Latest HD Coating to further upgrade optical performance

The newest high-performance HD Coating* has been applied to some of the optical elements already treated with full multi-coating. Compared with conventional multi-coatings, this assures higher transmittance with less reflection. The result is that the Papilio III WR delivers extra-clear, higher-contrast images even under such demanding conditions as backlighting.

High-performance optical design

All optical elements of the Papilio III WR are treated with a full multi-coating process to assure the optimum imaging performance, while minimizing unwanted reflections. The combination of the aspherical optical elements and the high-refraction BaK4 index glass prisms also delivers a sharp, clear subject image without distortion, even at the edges of the image field.

Easy-to-hold rubber casing

The entire binocular body is encased in a protective rubber casing to assure better holding comfort and superior impact resistance.

Long eye relief

This model’s long 15mm eye relief allows even eyeglass-wearers to clearly and comfortably observe the entire field of vision.
