Lunt LS60MT

SBIG Aluma AC455
The SBIG Aluma AC455 represents the state-of-the-art in Advanced Scientific CMOS cameras for astronomical imaging systems. Designed for reliability and performance, this camera ensures that you get the most from your telescope.
Avoiding various pitfalls of USB 3.0 interfaces, including short cable lengths, unreliable drivers, and electrical noise, this all-new design incorporates a 10 Gigabit per second Ethernet interface. This provides an extremely fast and highly reliable computer interface.
Extremely High Sensitivity and Dynamic Range
We use exclusively Industrial-grade IMX455 sensors for maximum reliability and performance. The combination of super-low 2.1 e- read noise, 51,000 e- well depth, and 16-bit conversion provides very high dynamic range. Increasing camera gain allows for read noise of 1.6 e- or better. Our electronics are carefully designed to ensure a stable bias level, simplifying calibration and quantitative measurements.
Thanks to a back-illuminated pixel design, the quantum efficiency is extremely high, providing exceptional sensitivity and minimizing integration times.
The above graph shows the absolute quantum efficiency curve for the IMX455 monochrome sensor as measured by an independent university researcher. The sensor features a peak quantum efficiency of 94% at 480 nm.
10 Gigabit Ethernet for Fast Download
The Aluma AC455 uses SFP+ Fiber Ethernet interface. SFP+ hardware is readily available and widely supported, and allows for cable lengths 100X longer than USB 3.0 (300m / 1000ft versus a mere 3m / 10ft). SFP+ fiber cables are highly flexible, lightweight, and durable, meaning that installation is a breeze even on very large telescopes.
The 61 megapixel sensor reads out into the camera’s internal DDR3 frame buffer in just 0.25 seconds, and the camera’s fiber Ethernet interface transmits the image in 0.25 seconds. This means that a high-performance computer can achieve up to 2 frames per second.
A handy primer on SFP+ fiber Ethernet is available in Appendix F of the Aluma AC455 User Manual User Manual.
Powerful SmartCooling™ Technology
Achieving high quality long-exposure images requires strong cooling and stable temperature regulation.
The Aluma AC455 features powerful two-stage thermoelectric cooling. It uses the same highly reliable thermoelectric cooling system first developed for our venerable SBIG STX series cameras.
Cooler performance has been upgraded via our new Enhanced Cooling version, now designated as Aluma AC455ME (monochrome) and Aluma AC455CE (color). Older cameras can now be upgraded to the new cooling system at extra cost – contact us for more information.
Our SmartCooling technology automatically optimizes fan speed, allowing minimal acoustic noise when cooling requirements are low, while ensuring thermal stability and reliability at high power levels. It also protects the camera against possible damage if the heat sink temperature or cooler power draw exceeds safety limits.
Critical electronics are cooled via a separate heat sink and fan, minimizing their impact on sensor cooling.
All functions of the Aluma AC455 camera, including cooling, operate from a single 12VDC 8A power supply.
User Rechargeable Desiccant
SBIG pioneered including a high-tech user-replaceable cartridge with ceramic filter and molecular sieve desiccant. Unlike competing cameras, which require factory service when their chamber desiccant eventually saturates out, the user can easily recharge the desiccant. This eliminates the need for costly service – not to mention the associated down-time and shipping costs. This feature is especially important in high-humidity locations.
The desiccant cartridge can be easily removed without dismounting the camera from the telescope, as it is accessible via a small door on the side of the camera.
We recommend recharging the desiccant every two years; once a year in high humidity environments. This not only eliminates any risk of downtime, it ensures that your sensor never gets contaminated or corroded by moisture accumulation.
Electronic Shutter
The SONY IMX455 sensor features an electronic rolling shutter. No mechanical shutter is required for normal operation.
To facilitate dark frame subtraction, the Aluma AC455 can use an SBIG filter wheel as a dark frame shutter. An opaque “filter” (included) can be installed in a user-designated filter slot; the camera will automatically use that as its dark frame shutter when needed. This facilitates convenient sensor calibration especially in remote/robotic installations.
Quality You Can Trust
Built in our ISO 9001:2015 quality certified North American facility, this camera uses only the high-reliability industrial-grade IMX455 CMOS sensor. Backed by our industry-leading warranty, you can be assured that this camera will provide reliable performance over a long lifetime. Our user-rechargeable desiccant system ensures long-term frost-free operation without the need for periodically returning the camera for service.
Optional Filter Wheel The Aluma AC455 is compatible with the SBIG AFW-10-50SQ Filter Wheel, supporting up to ten 50 mm square filters. Our incredibly thin yet rugged AFW filter wheels are only 0.65″ (16.5 mm) thick, minimizing back-focus requirements. If your telescope focal ratio is f/7 or higher, you can alternatively use the SBIG AFW-12-50R Filter Wheel, which supports up to twelve 50 mm round filters. At faster f/ratios we recommend using square filters to prevent vignetting. The AFW mounts directly to the front of the camera. Installation and cabling is greatly simplified as both power and control is provided directly by the camera’s I2C AUX port. Single-Shot Color Option
Two versions of the camera are available – the standard Aluma AC455M, and the Aluma AC455C Single-Shot Color camera. The AC455C uses an on-chip RGB Bayer matrix to produce color images, after suitable post-processing. For best results we recommend performing dark frame calibration prior to the color conversion (de-Bayer); this capability is built into the included MaxIm LT software as part of its Stack feature. The Single-Shot Color camera model is particularly useful in prime focus applications, where minimizing shadowing is important. The camera’s round profile helps minimize diffraction artifacts. For most applications we recommend using the Aluma AC455M monochrome camera, as it provides the greatest sensitivity and resolution. It can be used in conjunction with a filter wheel to produce RGB color or narrowband images, or to take photometric measurements using suitable filters. The included MaxIm LT software automates the process of acquiring and stacking multi-band images. Self-Guiding and Adaptive Optics Options Available
The available SBIG SBIG StarChaser SC-4 Off-Axis Guider Camera is an excellent low-cost option for integrated autoguiding in front of the filters, and it supports our SBIG AO-X Adaptive Optics accessory. The AO-X uses a tip-tilt window to quickly and precisely adjust the image position in response to autoguider feedback. With Adaptive Optics there is no backlash, stiction, or lag, and the movements are precise and accurate. This allows the AO-X to not only remove the effects of periodic error, drift, and wind gusts, but also reduce the effects of atmospheric seeing. When used with an Aluma AC camera, the AO-X requires the StarChaser SC-4. For more information please see AO-X. I2C AUX Port
All SBIG cameras include a convenient auxiliary control port (also known as an I2C AUX port), which controls the filter wheel and provides optional external trigger interfaces. Unlike older SBIG models, the AUX port is not used for AO-X control, as this function is now handled by the optional SBIG StarChaser off-axis guiding camera. MaxIm LT Software
All SBIG cameras come with our MaxIm LT software – a $249 value! MaxIm LT is a special version of our venerable MaxIm DL software for Windows that provides complete control of your camera, filter wheel, and autoguider, plus advanced image processing capabilities. If you wish you can upgrade to MaxIm DL Pro to get complete observatory integration and even more processing and analysis capabilities. ASCOM Driver
An industry-standard ASCOM driver is available, allowing you to control the camera from popular Windows-based astronomy applications. Mac and Linux drivers are available upon request. Please contact us for details. Choice of Adapter Plate
We now offer a choice of adapter plates. Currently available adapter plates include: Included Accessories
All Aluma AC cameras include a deluxe carrying case, universal power supply, Aluma AC power extension cable, your choice of adapter plates, and MaxIm LT software. Required Fiber Network Components
The Aluma AC455 uses a fiber Ethernet connection. You will need: All of these are readily available – information on sources is included in the User Manual. For your convenience these components can be ordered with the camera. Please note that the transceivers we supply are rated for industrial temperature range and are therefore suitable for winter temperatures. If you are in a temperate climate you may be able to use less-expensive modules.

The SBIG Aluma AC Series represents the state-of-the-art in Advanced Scientific CMOS cameras for astronomical imaging systems. The camera’s advanced design permits high speed download via the USB 3.0 connection to the control computer. The Aluma AC4040 uses the Gpixel GSENSE4040 CMOS sensor with 16.8 million pixels at 9 microns. The sensor measures almost 37mm square. The Aluma AC series has powerful two stage cooling and supports optional water cooling. Aluma AC cameras can be operated directly from a 12VDC 8A power supply.
Design features include:
High Quantum Efficiency
Our previous flagship CCD camera, the STX-16803, had very good peak quantum efficiency at 60%. The new Aluma AC4040 improves on this significantly.
The new Aluma AC4040 standard Front-Side Illuminated (FSI) model has a peak Quantum Efficiency (QE) of 74%, and features a much broader peak that is almost flat through the visible spectrum – from 450 nm through to over 900 nm. This means the overall sensitivity of the Aluma AC4040 is much higher than its CCD predecessor.
The FSI camera is available with an economical Class 2 sensor, or a premium Class 1 sensor with fewer pixel defects.
We recommend the FSI Class 1 camera for most applications, as it has the best performance tradeoff in most situations. FSI cameras have excellent sensitivity, and have much lower dark current and higher well depth compared to BSI cameras. In most situations this provides the best tradeoff for signal, noise, and dynamic range.
Aluma AC4040 Quantum Efficiency
BSI Version
The Aluma AC4040BSI is a special-order version, featuring a Back-Side Illuminated (BSI) sensor. The BSI sensor has an incredible peak QE of 95%, and more importantly features features significant UV sensitivity beyond 250 nm. In order to achieve this performance, the compromise is much higher dark current and lower full-well capacity than the standard FSI sensor. The BSI version is therefore best suited to applications where UV sensitivity is required, or for applications such as Space Situational Awareness that require rapid acquisition of faint targets. For most other applications we recommend the FSI version as it provides the best overall compromise between sensitivity, noise, and dynamic range.
The chamber window for the Aluma AC4040BSI can be ordered with either the standard VIS-NIR coatings, or with optional UV-VIS coatings for optimal UV sensitivity.
Please note that the BSI camera is a special order item. They are built-to-order, and as such have longer lead times. The standard camera includes a Class 1 sensor. Class 0 sensors are also available; please call for pricing.
StackPro™
The Aluma AC4040 scientific CMOS camera features StackPro™, a revolutionary feature that performs image stacking inside the camera.
CMOS sensors often have more limited well depth and bit depth than their CCD predecessors. At the same time, the modern CMOS sensors have much lower read noise than the equivalent CCD. This low read noise can be used to advantage, by stacking many shorter exposures to achieve the same final result. This does however result in a lot of extra disk usage and post-processing.
StackPro™ performs the stacking automatically, inside the camera. It automatically subdivides your exposure into up to 16 individual subexposures, and stacks them inside the camera prior to download. This eliminates the excessive amounts of data cluttering up your hard drive. Stacking can also be used as an alternative to HDR mode.
HDR Mode
The sensor in the AC4040 is capable of operating in HDR mode, where high-gain and low-gain images are read out simultaneously. An HDR Merge plug-in is available for MaxIm DL Pro, which greatly simplifies the process of producing clean, highly linear images.
Superior Cooling
Proven pin heatsink design shared with industry leading STX series cameras gets the heat out while providing low vibration. Includes SmartCooling™ intelligent thermoelectric cooling and fan operation.
Water Circulation Ready
For high ambient temperature environments, the liquid cooling option improves thermal performance and helps minimize dark current.
Electronic and Mechanical Shutters
The GSENSE CMOS sensor has an electronic rolling shutter. In addition the Aluma AC series cameras include a mechanical shutter to enable convenient dark-frame subtraction for optimal performance and sensitivity. This is essential for remote/robotic operation.
Optional 7 and 10 Position Filter Wheel
The Aluma AC4040 is compatible with the new 10 position SBIG AFW-10-50SQ filter wheel, utilizing 50 mm square filters.
It is also compatible with the 7 position FW7-STX filter wheel.
Self-Guiding and Adaptive Optics Options Available
The available SBIG StarChaser SC-4 is an excellent low-cost option for integrated autoguiding in front of the filters, and it supports our SBIG AO-X Adaptive Optics accessory.
USB 3.0 Interface
The Aluma AC includes a USB 3.0 interface port for high speed downloads. For installations where longer cable lengths are required, the port is also compatible with USB 2.0. I2C AUX Port
The STX cameras have a convenient auxiliary control port (also known as an I2C AUX port), which controls the filter wheel and provides optional external trigger interfaces. Unlike older SBIG models, the AUX port is not used for AO-X control, as this function is now handled by the optional SBIG StarChaser SC-4 off-axis guiding camera. MaxIm LT Software
All SBIG cameras come with our MaxIm LT software – a $249 value! The shutter is designed to be “even illumination” for the best accuracy in photometric measurements.
High Performance KAF-8300 Image Sensor
The Aluma 8300 uses the popular 8 megapixel ON Semi (formerly Kodak) KAF-8300-AXC sensor. The sensor has 3448 x 2574 pixels at 5.4 microns square, for a 17.96 mm x 13.52 mm chip size.
This is a high sensitivity full frame CCD sensor with low dark current and low read noise. Combining this high performance sensor with Aluma’s high cooling performance and low readout noise results in exceptionally clean images.
This sensor includes microlens technology that concentrates light on the sensitive area of each pixel. The CCD’s sensitivity peaks in the center of the visible spectrum at 550 nm, and maintains high sensitivity throughout the visible spectrum.
SmartCoolingTM
All Aluma cameras include our powerful new SmartCooling technology. The two-stage cooler, powerful fans, and advanced heat sink designed using thermal flow simulation combine to produce typical cooling delta from ambient of -50C. This is quite a feat considering the Aluma’s very compact and lightweight package.
SmartCooling automatically adjusts the fan speed to optimize cooler performance and power consumption. The camera’s firmware is constantly monitoring the sensor and heat sink temperatures, as well as controlling the cooler power. When full cooling power is needed – when ramping down or running near full power – the fans ramp up to their maximum speed, resulting in the strongest possible cooling. When less cooling power is needed the fans automatically slow to reduce noise levels and power consumption. SmartCooling also prevents any possibility of overheating by backing off power if the heat sink gets too hot – so you don’t need to worry if your camera is baking in a hot observatory during the day.

- Detects cloud and daylight
- Audible alert
- Battery powered
- Standalone operation
- Not intended for permanent installation
A beeping sound rouses you at 1 AM, and looking out of the tent you see it’s finally cleared off. You pop the tarp off your telescope, line up a shot, get the autoguider running, and start the exposure series going. You’re still pretty tired though, so you head back into the tent, comfortable in the knowledge that the Boltwood Portable Cloud Sensor will wake you up if the conditions deteriorate again.
The Portable Cloud Sensor is designed to alert you when the cloud conditions change. It consists of a sensor head and a control box, connected by a cable. The sensor head is placed outside, pointing up at an unobstructed sky. The control box can be conveniently located inside a tent or building, as needed. The control box includes batteries that will power the unit for over 100 hours, plus an alarm beeper, a headphone jack for “silent” alarms, and simple user controls.
The Portable Cloud Sensor measures the amount of cloud cover by comparing the temperature of the sky to the ambient ground level temperature. The sky temperature is determined by measuring the amount of radiation in the 8 to 14 micron infrared band. A large difference indicates clear skies, whereas a small difference indicates dense, low-level clouds. This allows the sensor to continuously monitor the clarity of the skies, and to alert the user when conditions change.
A built-in daylight sensor is also included. When the sensor is set to detect “Clear & Dark” conditions, it will alarm for clear skies unless the sun comes up first, in which case it lets you sleep in. When the sensor is set to detect “Cloudy or Light” conditions, it will alert you when clouds roll in or dawn approaches, so you can protect your telescope against the elements (including the sun!).
Although the Portable Cloud Sensor uses the same cloud detection technology as it’s big cousin, the Boltwood Cloud Sensor II, it is not designed for permanent installations. It does not detect rain/moisture, wind, or humidity. The sensor is gently heated to prevent dew or frost, but it does not have the power to clear itself after a rain shower; it must be wiped off. It cannot connect to a computer or trigger an observatory dome closure. For permanent installations please use the Boltwood Cloud Sensor II.
The control box, shown at left, can be conveniently located next to your pillow while you sleep. The simple user controls let you set the cloudy/clear threshold, set it to alarm for clear or cloudy conditions, and turn it on/off. On the side are two jacks; one for the sensor cable and one for optional headphones (not included).
Includes Sensor Head, Control Box, and Cable.
