Introducing the new Paramount ME Series 6 observatory workhorse.
The Paramount ME Series 6 represents the latest in gear-driven GEM performance.
Its new features include a state-of-the-art MKS 6000 telescope control system that lets you connect via USB C, Ethernet, and Wi-Fi. Its two-port USB 2.0 hub is conveniently located on the instrument panel
The Paramount ME Series 6 remains an observatory favorite among professional and advanced-amateur astronomers.
On-axis Absolute Encoders vs. Motor-based Encoders.
Paramount's equipped with on-axis absolute encoders know where they are at all times. Paramount's with incremental encoders (or motor-based encoders) know only how far they have moved since they were initialized using a nightly process called homing.
The crucial additional difference is that the on-axis absolute encoders are fitted directly to the mount axes themselves, bypassing the worm drives. Paramount's with incremental encoders are fitted to the worms instead, which means that with incremental encoders alone, periodic errors in the worm drive show up in the tracking. These mounts must be calibrated and corrected using a process called periodic error correction (PEC), which measures and records the repeatable gear train errors and removes them. (TheSky features advanced, multi-harmonic PE detection and PEC calibration that minimizes periodic error in mounts with incremental encoders.)
For mounts with incremental encoders, homing re-zeros the encoders when precise sensors on each of the axes are reached. From then on, the incremental encoders are in effect delivering absolute readings.
However, the crucial additional difference remains, namely that the incremental encoder system is behind the worm drive, and periodic error correction is still required to get the best out of the RA tracking.
High-resolution on-axis absolute encoder technology is significantly more expensive than incremental encoders.
Are on-axis absolute encoders right for me ?
The short answer is, “it depends.”
Gear-driven Paramounts equipped with on-axis absolute encoders do not have periodic error, require no mechanical initialization (or homing), and the number of TPoint pointing samples needed for precision calibration is reduced.
These advantages expedite nightly setup, negate one-time periodic error training, and shorten the calibration process require to achieve spectacular pointing and tracking performance. However, the Paramount worm gear's uncorrected periodic error is low (below 7 arc seconds peak to peak), and, after a one-time PE training, periodic error correction (PEC) generally make it negligible. The Paramount without on-axis absolute encoders requires a nightly Find Home process that usually takes a minute or less to complete.
So, at least with Paramounts, periodic error is effectively in the noise, and homing straightforward.
What about pointing and tracking?
Without on-axis absolute encoders, Paramounts routinely produce 5-to-10-minute unguided exposures; many have reported 20 minutes. Also without on-axis absolute encoders, Paramount’s produce all-sky pointing accuracies at or below 30 arcseconds RMS (usually less than 15 arcseconds on fixed mirror telescopes).
Paramount’s exceptional software makes the above performance possible. TheSky Professional edition, in conjunction with TPoint™ and ProTrack™ the mount’s position is continually updated in both axes to correct system-wide pointing and tracking errors caused by tube flexure, atmospheric refraction, polar misalignment, harmonic errors from mis-centered encoders and/or worm gears, and more.
On-axis absolute encoders alone cannot correct these errors which exist with all telescopes. A properly applied telescope model is necessary to achieve superior pointing and tracking.
So are on-axis absolute encoders right for you? Perhaps if you want to enjoy the conveniences mentioned above. And for many, that’s enough. With that said, the optional on-axis 26-bit Renishaw absolute encoders with 0.02 arc second precision are the finest available and they operate in temperatures between +80°C and –40°C.

Coming soon – available for preorder.
The SBIG Aluma AC Series represents the state-of-the-art in Advanced Scientific CMOS cameras for astronomical imaging systems. The camera’s advanced design permits high-speed download via the USB 3.0 connection to the control computer. The SBIG Aluma AC2020BSI uses the Gpixel GSENSE2020BSI-H CMOS sensor with 4 million pixels at 6.5 microns in a 2048 x 2048 array. The sensor measures just over 13.3mm square. The Aluma AC series has powerful two-stage cooling and supports optional water cooling. Aluma AC cameras can be operated directly from a 12VDC 8A power supply.
Design features include:
Back-Illuminated Sensor
Incredible sensitivity! High-performance back-illuminated sensors are flipped over and thinned during manufacture, so incoming light does not encounter any circuitry before hitting the sensitive pixel area. This provides optimum sensitivity across the entire visible spectrum – and beyond.
The sensor in the GSENSE2020BSI-H has a peak quantum efficiency of 91%, with a broad peak in the visible spectrum. For near UV and IR applications, it features good sensitivity all the way from 200 nm to 1000 nm.
Chamber Window Coating Options
The GSENSE2020BSI-H sensor is windowless, which provides the optimum sensitivity across the sensor. For windowless sensors we recommend recharging the desiccant plug annually, to avoid any risk of moisture contamination on the sensor.
The fused silica optical window on the sealed sensor chamber is available with two standard coating options, depending on your application. VIS-NIR provides optimal sensitivity from 400 nm through 1000 nm. UV-VIS provides optimal transmission from 250 nm through 700 nm.
StackPro™
The SBIG Aluma AC2020BSI scientific CMOS camera features StackPro™, a revolutionary feature that performs image stacking inside the camera.
CMOS sensors often have more limited well depth and bit depth than their CCD predecessors. At the same time, the modern CMOS sensors have much lower read noise than the equivalent CCD. This low read noise can be used to advantage, by stacking many shorter exposures to achieve the same final result. This does however result in a lot of extra disk usage and post-processing.
StackPro™ performs the stacking automatically, inside the camera. It automatically subdivides your exposure into up to 16 individual subexposures, and stacks them inside the camera prior to download. This eliminates the excessive amounts of data cluttering up your hard drive. Stacking can also be used as an alternative to High Dynamic Range (HDR) mode.
HDR Mode
The sensor in the AC2020BSI is capable of operating in HDR mode, where high-gain and low-gain images are read out simultaneously. Our included MaxIm LT software features an HDR merge feature, which greatly simplifies the process of producing clean, highly linear images.
Superior Cooling
Proven pin heatsink design shared with industry-leading STX series cameras gets the heat out while providing low vibration. Includes SmartCooling™ intelligent thermoelectric cooling and fan operation.
Water Circulation Ready
For high ambient temperature environments, the liquid cooling option improves thermal performance and helps minimize dark current.
User Rechargeable Desiccant
SBIG pioneered including a high-tech user-replaceable cartridge with a ceramic filter and molecular sieve desiccant. Unlike competing cameras, which require factory service when their chamber desiccant eventually saturates out, the user can easily recharge the desiccant. This eliminates the need for costly service – not to mention the associated downtime and shipping costs. This feature is especially important in high-humidity locations.
Electronic and Mechanical Shutters
The GSENSE CMOS sensor has an electronic rolling shutter. In addition, the Aluma AC series cameras include a mechanical shutter to enable convenient dark-frame subtraction for optimal performance and sensitivity. This is essential for remote/robotic operation.
Optional 12 Position Filter Wheel
The SBIG Aluma AC2020BSI is compatible with the new 12 position SBIG AFW-12-50R filter wheel, utilizing 50 mm round filters.
It is also compatible with the 7 position FW7-STX filter wheel, utilizing 50 mm square filters.
Self-Guiding and Adaptive Optics Options Available
The available SBIG StarChaser SC-3 is an excellent low-cost option for integrated autoguiding in front of the filters, and it supports our SBIG AO-X Adaptive Optics accessory.
The AO-X uses a tip-tilt window to quickly and precisely adjust the image position in response to autoguider feedback. With Adaptive Optics there is no backlash, stiction, or lag, and the movements are precise and accurate. This allows the AO-X to not only remove the effects of periodic error, drift, and wind gusts but also reduce the effects of atmospheric seeing. When used with an Aluma AC camera, the AO-X requires the StarChaser SC-3.
For more information please see AO-X.
USB 3.0 Interface
The Aluma AC includes a USB 3.0 interface port for high-speed downloads. For installations where longer cable lengths are required, the port is also compatible with USB 2.0.
I2C AUX Port
The STX cameras have a convenient auxiliary control port (also known as an I2C AUX port), which controls the filter wheel and provides optional external trigger interfaces. Unlike older SBIG models, the AUX port is not used for AO-X control, as this function is now handled by the optional SBIG StarChaser SC-3 off-axis guiding camera.
MaxIm LT Software
All SBIG cameras come with our MaxIm LT software – a $200 value! MaxIm LT is a special version of our venerable MaxIm DL software that provides complete control of your camera, filter wheel, and auto guider, plus advanced image processing capabilities. If you wish you can upgrade to MaxIm DL Pro to get complete observatory integration and even more processing and analysis capabilities.
Included Accessories
All Aluma AC cameras include a deluxe carrying case, universal power supply, Aluma AC power extension cable, USB 3.0 cable, and MaxIm LT software.

Optec Temperature Compensating Focuser-S3i
No corners were cut with this model. The massive drawtube has a 3.00-inch I.D. and is made from 7075, the strongest of the commercial aluminum alloys. To prevent any slippage common to Crayford style focusers, the drive rod is pressed onto the drawtube with a force of about 500 pounds. The TCF-S3 can take this extreme pressure because the drive rod is made from a ground bar of high speed steel with a diameter of 0.375 inch. Hardened rails of stainless steel are embedded in the drawtube to engage the drive rod and take the strain.
TCF-S3 with gear cover removed. All gears are made from 303 stainless.
The total linear travel of the drawtube is 1.00-inch with a resolution of 0.0001-inch. Like the TCF-S, a control box with IN and OUT pushbuttons, serial computer interface and digital display control all functions of the TCF-S3. All other features of the TCF-S3 are similar to the TCF-S. It uses the same cables, temperature probe and the new remote keypad. It is also compatible with the current Optec control software TCF-S.exe.
Other telescope mounts can be made custom in our shop. This focuser is only intended for large scope with massive mounts. See price list for a list of available mounts. A 3-inch to 2-inch adapter is available to fit Optec and other standard 2-inch accessories.
TCF-S3 with standard accessories that include controller, temperature probe and power supply (not shown).
For owners of the Paramount ME, Optec offers a special kit that can conveniently wire the TCF-S3 through the mount. In addition, both the IFW and Pyxis can also be mounted and wired through the mount for easier use and less cables.

Pixfra Mile 2 Thermal Monocular: creating new pathways for birding and conservation
Thermal imaging is changing the way we observe and count birds in their natural environment - at all times of the day or night, without intrusive lighting or disturbance.
Any birder knows there's often times when birds are hidden from view, either by foliage or the time of day. It becomes even more frustrating when bird counts are needed to estimate population or species locations for conservation efforts and protection and they simply can't be properly seen.
In situations like this, no matter how powerful the binoculars you're using, the birds will remain hidden.
Thermal imaging devices lets you "see" birds via the heat their bodies produce - revealing them in bushes and trees or when there's simply not enough natural light otherwise.
Have a chat to the experts at BINTEL about how new generation devices like the Pixfra Mile 2 can help how you discover new ways to view nature.

Clarity right up to the edge - SWAROVISION Field Flattener
This type of image definition has never been achieved before in any other spotting scope, thanks to the field flattener lenses creating a virtually flat image. Even the finest structures are reproduced with razor-sharp clarity right up to the edge with no need for constant refocusing.
The result: every detail is instantly captured, producing a perfect image without any distortions.
Maximum contrast - Including HD optics
A highly innovative optics design combined with fluoride- containing HD lenses minimise interfering colour fringing. This enables maximum
colour fidelity and leads to a significant improvement in resolution and contrast.
The result: an even more lifelike, contrast-rich image.
A complete view - Large field of view and high zoom range
Nothing escapes you. Thanks to their wide field of view, the ATX/STX spotting scopes provide you with a broader, more exciting platform for your viewing experience.
In spite of their high zoom range, the new generation of spotting scopes offers a large field of view. This allows you to achieve optimum magnification and detail recognition and also makes it extremely easy for you to search for and find objects, especially if they are in motion.
Eye relief plus - Large field of view even for spectacle wearers
SWAROVISION features a long eye relief and the removable twist-in eyecup is individually adjustable.
The result: even spectacle wearers can enjoy a large field of view, not to mention the inimitable edge sharpness. An additional eyecup has been specially developed for spectacle wearers to further increase viewing comfort.
Maximum colour fidelity - Optimised coatings
The enhanced lens and prism coatings (SWARODUR & SWAROTOP) give noticeably better colour reproduction combined with even greater transmission. SWAROCLEAN coatings on the outer lens surfaces create a non-stick effect, making it easier to clean.
The result: even more impressive observing experiences, even in low light.
Ingenious System
The new modular design offers previously unimagined flexibility and you are free to choose the perfect solution as the situation dictates. In collaboration with experts we have developed digiscoping adapters that open up a new realm of ways in which to observe and share the most beautiful moments.
Perfectly designed down to the smallest detail making you equipped for any situation.
Just one hand
When every second counts. Imagine a plover flitting over the shore one minute and taking off into the sky the next. The ATX/STX spotting scopes ensure that you are prepared for moments like this. This is because the new position of the zoom ring, which is now directly behind the focusing ring, makes it easier to handle. It means that you can zoom and focus with one hand, while steering the spotting scopes direction with the other.
This completely new ergonomic design offers a crucial benefit for digiscopers in particular. They can now use the camera quickly, easily and accurately with one hand, while the other concentrates on zoom and focus.
Easy to transport
Not a gram too heavy for top optical performance. Size and weight is the name of the game for all those who like to travel or spend long days in the field. The ATX/STX series means that bulky spotting scopes that are difficult to pack and heavy to carry are a thing of the past.
The modular design enables you to store the objective and eyepiece modules separately and the smaller dimensions also mean that you can easily and safely store individual modules in your luggage.
